Oil leak aft end of gearbox

Post by Pinz99x »

Hi all, first time posting. I have a question regarding gearbox oil leak when gearbox oil is at operating temp. I have a 1974 710M which has the drive train upgrade. The Pinz sees very low and infrequent use sadly. Gear oil has started leaking from the aft end of the gearbox at the drive shaft connection. This had been an occasional drip but now leak is much, much worse. The photo shows top view of connection to gearbox and I noted the gap indicated by arrow, gap measures approximately 1/16 inch and I am able to slightly move the drive shaft LATERALLY, but only slightly. I've not paid any attention prior but notice this gap now and I am not a drive train guy to know if this gap is expected/appropriate or if it appears something has shifted.

Does this gap appear to be excessive and might this also be related to the oil leak I am observing? If this gap is appropriate, is it likely then that the oil leak is resulting from rear seal in the gearbox being compromised?

Likely unrelated, but I have also recently had issues from a stop where 2nd gear does not want to fully engage and 'pops' out of gear at releasing the clutch. Gearbox linkage/shifter appear to be in tolerances as described in manual - so thought I'd mention this matter too. Am worried this issue might be gear wear.

If owning a Pinzy was too easy then it wouldn't be much fun :D Appreciate any direction the forum might offer.
