extend gas tank from pizi-shop?
i'm thinking of getting the 40 gal tank from the pinz-shop http://www.pinzi-shop.de/html/zubehor.html (scroll to page bottom). has anyone else around here ever done that or have an opinion about that? it looks good from what little i can see.
Gas tank
It looks like that tank is going to cost around 1,600 U.S.
I will make you one as nice for $1,000.00 anytime you want it.

CWR has an armored tank for $1,450.00. The tank holds 32gallon. I have one on my truck and really enjoy the higher ground clearance on that side of the truck.

heya mike - yeah, remember we talked about that one? i'd much rather have 40 gallons than 32. still don't like cwr's armour, too. should be smooth. and the tank should be bigger. i need the range.
also, mike -i've become very interesting in your steering wheel. do you think your friend who made yours would make one for me?
skybarney - do you know what the super special hidden baffling in the tank looks like? that's the question i have. could you really make a gas tank for me? would it be as nice as the one pinzi-shop sells?
one of the engineers i work with races cars and has lots of hookups for welding but i don't know what those baffles look like and i know nothing about gas tanks. that tank at pinzi-shop supposedly has the cool baffling. i'm all about utilizing wisdom gained by other's experience.

My friend is an awesome fabricator. I would simply have him do everything after the design work was done. I had asked him about making me one once and he thought no problem. Run about 1000.00 with materials prices and a good tank liner. That was a two year ago price so it might be a hair higher with current materials.
As for the baffles? I don't think I would copy the Pinz tank exactly. I would setup the same baffle system used by racers though.
If you know some good welders I would just design what you want with cardboard and give it to them though. Making a gas tank is not rocket science.

Welding up a gas tank may not be rocket science, but it is a liability concern! I spoke to a manufacturer of aftermarket fuel tanks once. He told me that they can create an exact replica of an existing fuel tank with no Department of Transportation problems, but if they produce something unique it has to pass all of the testing to be made legal for the road. Much $$$$ and not worth it for them.
I think Cold War Remarketing has an "off road use only" disclaimer for that very reason.
As I posted in another thread, my solution to the range issue is a second tank I can mount in the bed for those extended trips. I'd really hesitate to build one up for someone else. I'm pretty sure I won't sue myself if something goes wrong!

is there anyone out there in the public who might check my tank to see if it's dot approved? well at least my tail lights are right now.
so maybe i just need to know what this whole baffle thing is about and kinda do the same thing myself?
skybarney - so that 40 gal tank idea has already been thrown around and priced? i'd really like to find out the current price and understand the full design details and see if i could just get one!

2012...I am also not happy with the standard tank size but will be taking a different approach. I will keep the standard tank and run with many Jerry cans. I would also like to add the optional secondary tank with a manual fuel flow cutoff, if I can find one. The reason for this is that if either tank does take a hit I won't be stranded with all my fuel on the ground. I quick patch and off I go. The smaller the tank, the less fuel loss is incured. Two smaller fuel tanks is the way to go in my opinion. If you need more fuel just add another 5 gallon jerry can for $20-$40.00 A whole lot cheaper than $1,000.00+ Just a thought

For my 'serious' runs, I carry 4 jerry cans total, which basically gives me dual tank capacity. I also have 10 gallons of water along (in addition to my drinking/washing water), the guys I run with are all water cooled, and have a lot less space than me.
