Is there any difference between the 710 & 712 in the transmission or high low box?

Also who got the new trans that was up for auction on ebay? Jim?

Trans for 710-712 are the same. Transfer case is lower geared for 712.
As for the TD trans on Ebay, Jim M Got it.

Tranny is the same. The T case is 12% lower in the 712 in both ranges.
710 .88 :1.0 high, 1.69:1.0 low
712 1.0 :1.0 high 1.92:1.0 low
This is off the top of my head.

I would have liked to have that tranny. it was for a 716

Thanks guys, I thought so but couldn't remember for sure. Since I won't be pulling the extra weight that the gearing was lowered to, for the 712 could I switch to the 710 gearing? I haven't decided to do this yet but would like to know if it is a viable option.

It's been done, and works fine in the ones I've driven.

Profpinz's 712 has a 710 T case.

It has been done here in Europe as well - and in fact the 712 will be able to drive a bit faster with a 710 T case in it. The only draw back is that you will have to shift more often when doing off-road.

Why, Dave? Do you need more torque for climbing? But, it would be a bit worse on highway.

At the moment, I am happy with the stock tranny and automatic transmission. A lot of torque for climbing, even if fuel consupmtion is 710-like.

Ugo, I think you missed something, that was a stock 716 tranny. it'd be nice to have spare.

Uh. I have to improve my English ... I understood that you are looking for a tranny with a higher reduction rate for your 716.

Actually talking to Peter the other day, and we felt a 6 or 7 speed for the Pinz would be nice. It would get rid of some of the "long leg" in the upper gears. A low granny gear, an OD, and closer intermediate gears.... but , you don't need to worry about that with your slush box.

Higher Tranny gears

The TD tranny is 33% higher in overdrive, but only 25% higher than the gasser's first. That puts the crawler about midway between the stock first and second. Since my W spends most of its time on the freeway/dirt roads, no real heavy offroading, I think I'll like the TD tranny...

Ford has a six speed manual in their trucks that has about the right gearing - 20% overdrive, and a low that is 8% lower - lower low, higher hi, but would it fit? I REALLY wanted a Gear Vendors overdrive so I could spit gears. The numbers looked great, but it's just too long to fit. Oh well.

I had done a OD tranny in a 712M years ago. The ratios were really off, had to use 1st for takeoff more often than not. In town was usually the bottom 3 gears, and downshifted out of 5th for power on the hiway. If I hadn't sold the truck, I would have gone back to the original trans. The OD trans belongs with the TD's T case

How hard is it to swap the t-cases?I often think the lower gearing for a 710 would be a plus. The 712 with it's x-tra traction could get by off road with a 710 case and would make it more "roadable ". As I have one of each, and if it was not a real bother,I would like to experiment with some swapping to find out for myself. ..... Someone get serious about my X-Tra K so I can remove these thoughts from my head! :?
