Fuel delivery question

First I'd like to state that I really like the mechanical fuel pump and don't want to change it out for an electric pump, as I want to keep the running electric draw to a minimum. I have been having troubles in the HOT Las Vegas summer with the fuel evaporating out of the carbs and fuel lines when the Pinz sits for a couple of days. This means a lot of cranking to replace the fuel and finally starting. I am concerned about the excessive cranking of the starter motor, causing premature failure of the starter.
I have two ideas to solve this problem and would like to bounce it off the forums accumulative knowledge and differing view points. I invite all comments.
1. Create a bypass fuel line that can be shut off and spliced into the system to fill the carb bowls. This would be a electric fuel pump activated by a switch just long enough to fill the bowls.
2. Same as above but using a hand pump fuel primer as used with outboard motors.
#2 is almost fool proof and pretty simple, but #1 also offers a backup pump for running in the event the mechanical pump fails.
Any suggestions? Miles
