Haflinger Heat Shield

Greetings,
I have been fixing my 1972 NA Haflinger and have noted that the engine cover becomes quite hot after extended use. On the inside of the cover, there are traces of what may have been an old heat shield, but currently there isn't much there. Has anybody used an aftermarket heat shield with good results, and if so, does it also affect engine noise to any degree?
