I went last weekend to Off Road Warehouse in San Diego and asked if they had some limiting straps I could use for the Pinz. The salesguy came outside and asked what type of Unimog it was. I told him what it was, and his response was that I was mistaken?!

He showed his wealth of knowledge by telling me that it was a Unimog model, or someone had made a kit and suckered me. LOL, it's always nice to be told by someone else that I don't know what kind of car I'm driving.

Oh, those are very special people, the misinformed.
I was told that mine was made by GM now that they had taken over the company.
Occasionally someone will say 'Good looking pinz'. But, for the most part it is either 'What is that?' or 'How much did it cost?' or 'Does it float?'
There is a great satisfaction in knowing something about your very own vehicle.
...although, when I am asked for gear ratios I am somewhat lost. I will have to start keeping a spec sheet in the thing for the real technocrats.

Best positive comment I've had was while filling up at the gas station. A guy in a very nice tricked out old bronco pulls up next to me and says," wow thought I had the cool rig"

Michael, being the kinder, understanding person that I am .... I'd take a pic of your 'Unimog' in front of the store , then post it on pirate 4x4 that an employee at that store set you straight, and that you don't have a Pinzgauer.... be sure to include a phone number for the store, so others can thank them for their wealth of knowledge. Definately the place I want to take my Pinz... aa , Haflinger...no rrr a Mog, (they'll tell me what I have) to when it's time to rotate the air in my tires.

LOL, I'm not quite that vindictive, but that would be pretty funny.

At least the guy didn't tell me it was a Hummer. It seems that's the other truck I own that I don't know I have.

Well, I just met another genius who knew more about my truck than me. It appears that Pinzgauer is made by AM General, and marketed through Steyr.

Uh....

Ironically, when I pointed out to him that Steyr is now making HUMVEES, he thought I was an idiot and started laughing as he left about how ignorant I was.

"Does it float?" is my favorite question and my answer is always, why yes it does, but only briefly!

I had a fun experience today. When I got out of the pinz at Home Depot there was a sheriff at my side. He wanted to 'check out my vehicle'.
When I asked if anything was wrong he just smiled and told me that he had followed me into the lot and just wanted to check it out cause he thought it was neat. I let him sit in it and he was really pleased and told me about his experiences sitting in the back of a Bradley in the middle east.
We parted with handshakes and smiles.

I,m wondering what the reaction of the "law" will be to my Pinz when I move to Poland. Though I suppose they are used to strange Russian and Czech built motors, some of which have Portal axles (none of which have that " kicked up the ass" look of the Pinz) I hope they will mistake it for British Army and leave well alone. (The Royal Engineers exercise a lot in Poland - the engineers like to play around building tank bridges and such like, Poland has lots of the right kind of Rivers) At least it will be unique, I,m pretty sure that as of now there are no civilian Pinzgauers in Poland. (correct me somebody and we can have off roading meets)
