Could anyone please tell me what is supposed to come in a complete Pinzgauer toolkit? I'm wanting to buy a 712M.

Hey There,
Do you mean the "OEM" toolkits specified in the Repair Manual? There are 2-3 of that variety... There's the small kit that drives along with you in the vehicle, the engine kit, and the driveline kit (with some largish components)...

Or, do you mean "what kind of tools should I have for my Pinz?"...

If it's the small, portable kit, I can run out to my K and do an inventory for you, but it breaks down to small hand-tools appropriate for the nuts on the Pinz, tape, brush, pliers (coulple kinds), spare bulbs, wire, ball-peen, plug wrench (adapter), etc... Pretty much everything you need for tinkering...

If it's the "what should I have", well, nothing out of the ordinary there. Although a couple of guys here have built some home-made tools (e.g balancing jig/adapter, other)...

As for the other OEM toolkits, I'd haveta look in the repair manual. There's a section in the back with the required tool breakdown...

Are you basing your decision to buy on whether the tool kit is complete or not?

If you are... what you will get are some 30 + year old tools that are sometimes rusty, with wooden handles, beat to a pulp and you will want to put together something with modern tools that does the job. About the only two tools that I have found were worth a hoot were the 10mm hex wrench and the jack handle. Perfect combo for breaking loose hard to remove oil fill drain plugs!
Seriously, all you will need is a good set of metric sockets, open-end/box end wrenches, metric hex wrenches and rachet extensions.

Tool sets have been missing from trucks for several years now. I kept the set from my 712 when I sold it. Surprisingly, they are good and complete set for normal repairs.

And before anyone ask, no, I won't sell my set.... they work on the Pink Cow just fine. .....

Wow! Great feedback and advice.

I will still buy a Pinzgauer if the toolkit is incomplete or even missing, but it would be nice to have a completely stock vehicle. I'm really most interested in the bulbs that come in the kit. I've not seen much posted about the various wattages for various applications in the vehicle, just the 24V. That voltage seems a bit hard to find.

Also, has anyone ever heard of using a 24V automotive generator instead of an alternator for the Pinzgauer? Is a 24V generator even available?

For the most part, the Pinz is what it is... if you feel the need to reinvent it, make it "better", then I'd suggest a SUV. Not to belittle anyone (not that I would do that ), but there have been several people here before that thought they could make it into something that it is not.

You don't need to worry about the "little" things like bulbs. They are all readily available. Remember that though these trucks are fairly inexpensive as used 4x4s, major parts are a king's ransom. When looking at a truck to buy, be sure of the drivetrain first, and then the general body. If you put location in your profile, we can then lead you to a dealer or other Pinz owners that can be of a help.

I sent the pdf off to you, and as you can see, there are not a lot of tools needed for most repairs.

Steve...Just make sure it has the Bottle jack with the curved top, Steel tow cable and Snow chains. The rest of the stuff is gravy. If you plan on staying with military plugs try and get the spark plug wrench. The three tools that I had to buy was the Fan spanner wrench, Front brake bleeder wrench and the Float bowl level guage. Good luck with the Pinz.
