Hi All

I am looking at fitting a 24volt compressor & air reservoir to my 710M. Has anyone fitted a similar set up? If you have i would be very interested if you could tell me which compressor & tank you have fitted. Also where have you mounted the compressor/reservoir on your vehicle?

Cheers

Sam

A popular, lower-cost alternative that many pinzers use is the 28v HUMMV take-off compressor from Surplus Center. I have mine mounted on the little ledge in the front of the cargo area. I also fabbed a small air tank that fits right next to it. There are some folks who run these without any tank at all. Yeah, it's kinda slow due to the low cfm, but it suits me fine for airing up tires and filling air mattresses, etc. Plus the 'low tech' look fits the pinz perfectly.

I got everything at surplus center except the air tanks. I got Via Air tanks from a 4x4 place. I used two 1 gallon tanks. This is minimum. It just depends on how much space you ar willing to give up.

Nice site. I noticed that they also have a 25 amp 24 to 12VDC converter for $199. Anyone try this one out or have a better solution?

I just purchased a 1974 710M that has a custom air compressor already installed. I am interested in selling the whole system since I need the cargo space more than I need onboard air. It's a slick set-up and works well. Check it out at the former owners site www.phishtaper.homelinux.com/compressor.htm

Make an offer if you're interested in buying a complete kit rather than figuring it all out yourself!

HeySam,

I sort of went all out as far as price is concerned, I pruchased a Oasis XD 3000 12/24v compressor kit from Oasis Mfg. http://www.oasisoffroad.com/p4.html It is an awsome compressor, I am currently using "their" 1.5 gallon tank, ( I have found a 5 gallon tank I am having worked over) to fit behind the passenger side rear wheel, but this thing is amazing, I have a 712M with 265/80r16 Swamper TSL Radials and I am constantly airing down to around 20psi or so per wheel for the trail, and on the road I run them at 65psi for better gas milage (17mpg) and easier steering, now when we are done on the trail, it takes about 5 to 8 minutes to air all 6 tires up to 65psi, thats to air all 6 tires not 1 tire at a time, I can also use an air gun to blow al the trail dust out of the truck and it will even run any air tool I want to take along with me, according to the mgf. it out does a 220v shop compressor as far as performance is concerned, the catch is the $1700.00 price (not including the 5 gal tank and fabricating I still need done) but I love it, I will take and post pictures of current installation and then the new tank when its done and installed at a later date.

Hey gang here are a few pics, more to come when it's finnished..

Has anyone ever made a pipe bumper for their Pinz that does double duty as an air tank?

I did on one of my Jeeps. It's a pain in the rear end. Unless you have a really good welder, you're likely to have small pinhole leaks which means your compresor will be cycling pretty regularly.

There is also a safety consideration; bumpers are meant to... well, bump. Filling one with compressed air in a severe impact could potentially lead to a minor explosion. I know air doesn't explode, but you get the idea. The last thing I want to be responsible for is my bumper exploding and injuring someone else.

Where have you guys been able to find the U bolts you are using to mount the compressor?

All the pics I've seen look like a perfect fit, and I can't seem to find those at the usual haunts (Home Depot, Lowes, Harbor Freight).

Thanks in advance!

The u-bolts I used were spec'd for muffler clamps. WAAAAAY cheaper than traditional u-bolts. I got mine at NAPA. On my page I give the Part # 733-5775 from NAPA. Back in '01 they were $9 for both compared to $45 for traditional u-bolts. Consider buying my old setup from twinpinzes it was well thought out and has all the hoses/brackets/fittings you'll need.

You can get the "guillotine" style from McMaster-Carr (www.mcmaster.com) for under $4 each. I got them about 1/2" too large, so I bout a rubber pipe coupling from the hardware store and put strips all around the compressor for vibration reduction (and it filled the extra space).
