Carb cutoff valve

Another problem has surfaced with the wonderful machine.
Symptoms: Sometimes it diesels and sometimes it won't hold the idle.
I think perhaps it is the third (from the front) cutoff valve.
When I was balancing the carbs and checking the cutoff valves for operation, the 3rd one clicked just by touching the connector. The others had to actually be removed to hear the click.
When I am driving and hit a bump in the road I think it shifts from off to on and back again, cause it goes from idling fine to having to goose the throttle to keep idle when I am stopped at a light.
There is also a slight smell of gas. I presume as the fuel builds up not going through that barrel of the carb and when I hit another bump and the switch is knocked into operation everything is fine.
Anyone have thoughts on this and how to solve it?
I had planned a trip to the desert this weekend but do not want to call from the middle of nowhere for assistance.
Cheers,
Morris
