Drop Towball Bracket

Hi All
I want to fit a standard towball in place of my pintle hook, but I would like to be able to bolt the hook back on when it is not in use.
Has anyone done this and how did you get over it? I am a bit worried that if drop the level of the ball too much then I will end up putting too much strain on the mounting bolts and the cast mounting.
