It has been quite awhile for me since I last posted. Looks like a lot of good upgrades to this bulletin board system - thanks Vince et al.. I still have my '71 710K and she is running real fine (it is the stopping part that is not so good). I am enjoying the plenty of "backwoods" opportunities in AZ. Enuff blabbering. In the last few months the braking characteristics have changed. When I apply the brakes the pedal nearly goes to the floor but does brake a fair amount. This is easily remedied by pumping the brakes once and I have full braking authority with no loss of pressure. As far as I can tell I have not lost any fluid from the resevoir. This p.m. I bled my front brakes and found a good bit of air bubbles that would not go away. I need your help as to what I should try next.

I should say that the truck does not get used much in hot months and sits for sometimes 2 to 3 months at a time (I know - my BAD!).

Try the obvious, adjust the brake shoes!!!!!!
This should be done every 4000-6000 miles

The SWPA is having its annual maintenance day the 17th of March at Tony's. You could always stop by and say hi to some of your local fellow pinz owners. Would be nice to meet you and help with the brake issue.

Thanks for the invite Mike. I will be out of town during that time. Do you guys ever go to the Saturday (every Saturday) Pavillions Car show in Scottsdale (Indian Bend off the 101)? I took my Pinz there last weekend and had several people deep trying to ask questions about the Pinz. A lot of fun.

I like your approach. But, does the initial soft pedal followed by the firm pedal sound like brake adjustment?

It is a classic textbook symptom ,adjust each shoe till it locks the drum, then back off 3 clicks(no drag). The fronts have 2 adjusters per wheel, the rears are single.

We looked into it but were told that they did not want clubs there. I know that they have a couple of clubs that show up but I assume they are some of the original group and don't want any outsiders. We have an open invite to a show at Guadalupe and Dobson and they would like to have the club show up.

On the brake issue if the lines are bled and have good fluid than it is more than likely an adjustment issue. I adjust mine every other oil change or roughly every 6K. I have found a place locally that will reline the shoes very reasonably. Let me know if or when you need their services.

Finished up the brake adjustment and she brakes just fine. Thank you VERY much for your time, patience, and expertise. I should have known it was adjustable being a Pinz.

The SWPA has a website www.swpinzgauer.org There is a calendar section as well as an outing section. These are the two most used and help to keep the members up to date. It is also a good place to post to see if any one wants to go out on off weekends. Tony is our resident pinz mechanic (if you have not already been to him).
