Broke my dang fuel pump. Cheaper Replacement?

File this under STUPID. Took the fuel pump out to fix the oil leaks around it. Took the pump apart to clean and inspect it. I think I put it back together wrong or something. Truck died today would not run. No fuel. Pulled pump and dismantled again. The insides of the base had self-destructed. The plastc piece the holds the spring to the plunger/membrane and shattered. Of course it could be a simple enough fix just buy the rebuild kit. But no the raised lip inside the base was also chewed up and shattered. So I guess I get to spend big bucks on a whole new fuel pump.

Researching found that some say the 1970 VW pump will work. Found 2 manufacturers: Brosol and Airtex. The Brosol is the one NAPA sells (M60175):

I found the Airtex at various suppliers:

The airtex looks a little better made and it's a little more than the Brosol. $50 vs. $30. They sure look like they will fit. Napa lists the Brosol at 3.5 to 4.5 GPH. Isn't that the same as the stock Pinz one?

Here's a replacement that works. I have one in my Pinzgauer. Just rotate the housing 180 degrees before installing.

That has GOT to be the exact same as a Pinz one. I bet they made them for Pinz. Crap they aren't in stock.

I just ordered one this week from www.partsamerica.com as a spare and it shipped the next day for $51.99. Part #1516753. UPS shows it due here on Monday. It's the same Beck Arnley pump for a '70 Beetle.

Hope this helps.

Sweet. Trying to find one I can have overnighted. I did find the Airtex one in stock at a Checker store over in Idaho Falls (1.5 hours away) for 32.99. Maybe I'll just order the Partsamerica one.

I see 2 types of base gaskets. Does it matter which one is used?

Ordered the Beck Arnley from PartsAmerica. Hopefully it will ship quickly. Looks like it's coming from AZ so it should be here quick...I hope.

I'm going to use the Pinz ones, but they look just like the one with center section open.

Both of the gaskets are used. The one with the small opening goes between the pump and the plastic base and the one with the large opening goes between the plastic base and the engine. Both gaskets are included in the rebuild kit also.

I used Hylomar Universal Blue Sealant to put a good seal on the gaskets which worked great but it is tough to find. Permatex Aviation Form-A-Gasket has been mentioned as excellent also.

Looking at the damage again, there is a small section of the raised lip that is in the bottom of the bowl of the base. It appears the split plastic ring sits in the center of that, then there is a brass cap that goes over that. I'm thinking the damage might not be that bad as "most" of the lip is still there. Plenty just to hold the plastic piece in place. I'm going to try the rebuild kit and see if it works. Then I'll have a spare.

That split plastic ring is where I went wrong. I had it upside down. Then it sat on top of the recess instead of down in it.
