Getting to the point of buying new tyres (or tires for those in the US) and I have a few questions about the original Mayolas: Are they 245/85/16 in size, and are they radial ply or cross ply?

Perhaps we could also have a survey of tyres in use by members, metric sizes please.

The Simex Extreme Trekker tyre size I use isn't on the poll list ..... but if I was to revert to a more "standard size" tyre, I'd go 255-85's (I originally ran 255-85 BFG MT's) and I voted that way.

I have 255/85/16 BFG MT's. But they will throw your milage and speed off a bit, unless you have an adjustable speedo. At 72kph I am going 50mph and that is about 8% difference. When I was figuring my milage per gallon it just hit me that my calcs were off juat a bit.

To answer your original question. The maloyas are closest in size to a 245/75/16 ---- in my opinion. I run 235/85/16 because there is a large selection and are less expensive than the larger tires. I do have a set of TRXUS 285/75/16 on one 710.

I couldn't vote in the pole for some reason but I run 285/75/r16's on two of my 710M's and 34x10.5 16's on one.

What I'm really wanting to do is get a tyre that is biggar (greater circumfrance) or at least equal to the Mayolas. 255/85/16 is, but I'm not sure about 235/85/16! Using an online calculator the Mayolas seem to be about 245/80ish/16 as they are marked 245 and measure 80cm diameter on my worn out ones.

Also anyone know if they are radial or cross ply?

I allways thought tires were specified as......Tread width/Side wall height as a percentage of tread width/Rim diameter. So a 245/80/16 the side wall height would be 196. Or have I been mistaken all these years? What a mix Metric/Percentage/Inches

The confusing thing is the mix of metric and imperial measurements!

For a 255-85 X 16
The width is 255 mm therefore the sidewall height is
85% of 255 = 216.75 mm
Therefore the height of the tyre is
(216.75 X 2) + the rim diameter (16" or 406.4 mm) = 839.9 mm (33.006")

Here are a couple of pics comparing a 235/85/16 vs. Maloya. The 235 is taller and a little wider. Both tires are very worn.

Cross ply or radial for the Mayolas?

The sizing makes sense in a theoretical way, but the reality does not add up, John's pics of 235/85/16 tyres beside the mayolas seem to prove that!

Also what is size 750-16 they seem to be similar to 145/85/16

AND for those of you cheapskates who must mix cross plays and radials on the same truck remember the "R&R" motto:- Radials to the Rear!

Now I'm still wondering if anyone is running 750-16 cross ply and how they size up.

In the UK there is only BF Goodrich AT / MT and Goodyear wranglers in 255/85/16 so they are out of my budget.

http://www.4site4x4.co.uk check out the General Super All Grip in the tyre menu, looks like it would keep the "look" of original.

Anyone else care to chip in as to how they find 235/85/16 in size, are they as tall as the mayola or perhaps taller?

I hope this research isn't time wasting as getting the right rubber is important to the handling and off/on road performance.

ScottishPinz - I was quite pleased with the Fedima remoulds that were on the Pinz when I got it. When worn, I replaced them with 750 x 16 Chaco's (Radial) last year.

Never had any issues with remoulds over the years. Great wet grip on the tarmac and equally important to me, they survive a lot of trips on nasty, sharpy, pointy rocks etc. on tracks I frequent. Haven't done any serious mud stuff though. Don't know how they will "self clear".

Most folk I've spoken to don't seem to have a very good opinion of the Mayola's. Similar grip on wet tarmac to a steel train wheel on a greased rail !! MMmmmm.
