Been wondering about the advantages of installing a 710 transfer case in the 712. I've seen some of the 12's for sale with these installed.
What are the benefits vs detractors

Higher gearing, so the on road RPMs improve. You lose a bit of 'low gear' off road prowess. Pros and cons simply depend on how you use your Pinz. I've never intended my Pinz to go fast. If anything, I'd like to try a 712 transfer case in a 710, then, same gearing as my 712, but a nice weight reduction.

I had mine changed to a 710 xfer case.
Not a inexpensive job, but I wanted a little better road speed.
I don't plan to move the factory specified weight and I'm not into extreme rock climbing, I just want a good reliable off-road camper.
I did lose some performance on steep grades, but with the 2.7 Litre upgrade it's about the same. I can now cruise an easy 60 - 65 mph on the flats without red-lining the engine.
Overall I'm happy, but there is a price to pay.

I'm not looking to haul huge payloads with the '12. Just me, some gear and the dog to get off the beated path. Unfortunatley the beaten path extends quite a ways in FL so I have a good bit of highway driving to do.
What do you think made more of an improvement, the 710 transfer case or the 2.7 upgrade?
I am supposed to be getting the EFI kit here in a month or so, and hope it helps a bit.

I've seen the 2.7 upgrade mentioned before. What all is involved with that and should there be any preliminary things done to the Pinz first? What is the advantage of the upgrade? Since I have a 710 changing diffs wouldn't help me.
Also, assuming the Pinz is in good enough shape to withstand the surgery, in round numbers what would be a ballpark figure to have that upgrade done?
Thanks.

The kit I believe is from exp imports and totals out around $2500 not counting labor. I'm not sure if that includes the camshaft or not.
I've got a 710 to experiment on and upgrading the engine to a 2.7 then switching the whole thing over to the 712 is a thought unning rampant through my head.
I'm going to put the EFI on the 710 first as it has the most problems with carbs and what not. The 712 runs like a champ but is has 50K less miles on it too.

The 2.7 upgrade provides about 12 c.i.d. increase in displacement, bringing the engine up to 165 c.i.d. This is not a lot but you also get a compression ratio of 8.6 : 1 . That will give a modest increase in power and still let you use 87 octane fuel.
The camshaft improves breathing for the increased bore. This is supposedly the grind that the Reb Bull people selected.
The only thought that I have had since upgrading is that if I wanted to turbocharge the engine I would have been better off keeping the old
7.5 : 1 compression ratio!
I'm happy with what I've done, but if a diesel conversion ever becomes available, I'll look into it.
I'm the type that keeps vehicles Forever! So it would be worth it.
(I got rid of my 1970 VW bus to make room for the Pinz)

at 8.5 w 5lbs boost your at 11.4/1 compression you can get a way with hightest gas but i wouldnt do much more @ 7.5 you can go about 7.5lbs boost and keep the same aspect ratio that is a differance of about 10 horsepower(as an uneducated guess) if you are going to turbo theres no need to go bigger

I'd be interested in doing the 710 xfer case in my 712, 10 more mph would make the trips a wee bit shorter and maybe quiet down the gear wine a bit I would hope, will be doing the 2.7 upgrade this fall (Jim LaGuardia) and EFI (also Jims) and have been talking about doing a small belt driven supercharger aswell, Have spoken with Patrick at CWRI for a long time and according to him as he spoke with some Steyr engineers that the pinz motor should take up to 5lbs of boost and no more, Jim L. Tells me some trucks had a blower on them with 3.5lbs of boost, either way it should about double the available horse power and make some highway hill climbs a bit more tollerable, will keep a log of everythign Jim and I do to the truck and we will also keep a photo log of all work preformed and update all as to our success.
