Installed EI's High Clearance Muffler-PICS

Installed the muffler I ordered from Expedition Imports today. It is much higher clearance than the OEM. Fit was pretty decent.

The tail pipe end was a little "odd". The mounting bar they welded on has 2 studs welded onto it. Mine may have been a Friday run. The one end had the stud nicely ground and the bar itself was rounded off. The other end was just a flat square cut with a bolt tack welded in.

The kit does NOT include new nuts and bolts. Made a run to the hardware store, no biggie. Then I discovered the studs they welded on ARE NOT METRIC. Great, another run to the store. I think the design would be better with just holes drilled through the mounting piece. That's how the OEM was mounted.

The muffler itself seems to be made of very thick steel. Has a Mercedes logo on it.

It is MUCH louder than the OEM. I still need to run an exhaust pipe, but it has a ricer-racer fart can sound right now. I was hoping it would be quieter, especially since I could shove my finger through the side of my OEM one. I hope the back pressure is sufficient.

Still not sure how I want to run the exhaust pipe. Any suggestions are welcome.

you definitely won't like running it out the side like the original. my 701m just had a new exhaust system installed, without the heat exchanger, and they ran it out the side. now fumes travel all around our heads and this pinz has all the tops removed. 1st on my list is to get the tail pipe run all tucked up to the top inboard corner of the rear wheel well and then straight back and down to clear that tail light plate. i have pix i can send you that i found - i think i grabbed them off this site tho. maybe search this site.

Ka, thanks if you want to e-mail them to me at tstanyon@msn.com.

After going on a test drive around the block, I'm not sure it's any louder. It has a "throatier" sound when first applying throttle. Almost sounds like a big diesel now.

I know I can't drive it like that anymore, got a little loopy feeling.

Hi Todd,

Thanks for posting this up. After 4 years of feedback on the old high clearance exhaust, we shifted to a different muffler. The new muffler used is a Mercedes unit that is built out of a much thicker material. When we checked the dB of the units against stock we found that the muffler is the same loudness as the stock unit, but with a different tone.

We did work with our exhaust shop and have gotten rid of the mounting studs. They seemed to think it would help out, in reality it became more of a pain on installation. (Changing them to the Metric fasteners seems to be a challenge :)

Run the exhaust out the rear. If you are trying to be quieter than the stock muffler, install a resonator on the pipe on the outlet. This is something we used to do with our kits and liked the results, but had lots of problems with the complexity of making it up in "kit form."

Cheers,

Scott Ingham
