Changing the hub oil without making a mess

Has anyone got any tips on how to change the wheel hub oil without it going all over the wheels, tyres, ground etc.?

Two ways, first is obvious, remove the wheels(adjust the brakes at the same time), or take a gallon coolant jug and cut the front out. Wedge it between the hub and the wheel, friction will keep it in place

In Australia we have 2 litre plastic Ice-cream containers/tubs that are a perfect size to "clip" in place between the housing and the wheel rim.
The cast strengthening ribs on the bottom of the housing grip the lip of the container while the container sits in place of the inside of the rib.
I'm sure SDP was involved in the design of this container as it couldn't be a better fit if you tried!

If you haven't got a similar size container available I'm sure you could cut or trim a slightly larger one down to fit

I usually tuck 6 containers in place, crack all the drain plugs, then go and have a cuppa while I'm waiting for the oil to drain!

Peter, could you post a picture of this container? I'm sure one could be fabricated from a milk jug or laundry bottle. Show it in place on the Pinzgauer, too, if possible.

I've used a long, narrow plastic funnel (think I got mine at an auto parts store) that has the wide end cut on a angle; this fits nicely between the hub and the wheel (with the wheel left on) and funnels the oil inward into a oil catch basin. Hardly a drop was missed.

Guess ice-cream has a horrible taste when you re-use those containers after changing hub oil!!

I just use a folded piece of cardboard and throw it away when the job is completed.

I bought this handy dandy drain pan at NAPA and it fits right in there real nice. No muss, no fuss.

Since the casinos don't use coin anymore, I broght home an old plastic coin can made to hold $100 worth of nickels, it fits perfectly under the plug and even stays in place while the oil is draining, you might be able to talk your bank out of one next time you are there.
