:D

I'm sure there is more to this story than what has been written so far.

Down here in FL we don't have hills so I'm not sure what you're talking about.

Hills?

Some ballast helps get traction... It seems obvious that you're using too much weight. Get rid of your current tires and you won't need as much weight to have decent traction on the steep grades.

Most of us do have problems when the slope exceeds 90 degrees.

The 5th gear in high range is in fact a sort of overdrive. It is not ment to keep your highway speed up to a 100 kmh on a steep highway road when your Pinz is heavily loaded .... etc

Your are incorrect, 5th gear is direct drive(input shaft directly coupled to output shaft). Overdrive is built into the 4x4 transfer case gearing, 6x6 cases are geared without.
And to answer the first post, yes, hills will slow down an 87 HP truck.
One solution to improve climbing hills is to bump up the compression and displacement, and install a custom cam to improve torque under load.
Look at the cam specs in the manual, there is much improvement to be made. Hopefully I will get to finish my new engine soon so I can test a new higher HP cam grind.
But before that I have to install my new lightened driveline and rebuilt transfer case

Mine doesn't slow down up hills. Of course I have a Laguardia 2.7 :)

im not talking about traction im talking about highway driving the hard top is heavier it slows down more. i dont know exactly the grade of steepness but its a highway so i take it that the 87 hp will slow down on some hills right!

What is the horsepower rating of your 2.7?

With gas prices the way they are I would ask whats the Mpg of the 2.7L.

Jim; how important is the new cam in regards to the increased power of the 2.7?
thanks

My cams are designed to increase torque curve to 4000 rpm and add a noticeable increase in power on hills.
Just ask Ed Olsen (Ramfan) how they perform
Overall around 20HP increase at the rear wheels.

I'll chime in here too; I got an honest extra gear in power - where before I HAD to downshift, now I don't... before it would take forever to accelerate in 5th (not surprising, with a 7500 lb truck) it actually accelerates like 4th now. :D :D :D
