Are these legal for importation to the US..or could they be?

Not to derail the discussion on those spectacular photos from Iceland but I did want to start a new discussion on the potential legality of some of the trucks for the US marketplace available at: http://www.shropshiregunbus.co.uk/

I was actually wondering if the 712K and the "high flotation" Icelandic rig would be legal in the US given these model designations and the age of these units?

Thoughts?

They have to be 25 yrs old for US and whatever your state allows.
In The Peoples Eco-Nazi Republic of California, we are only allowed 74 and older models

75 is a gray area on registration, but for DIRECT IMPORTATION, 74 is the newest we can have.

I can attest that the "high flotation" Icelandic rig was fantastic off road (in
Iceland). We used it for an expedition into the interior of Iceland between
two glaciers, 80 km from the nearest thing you could call a road. This was
in 1993.

The rig traversed rivers, rocks, and mud with ease while carrying six
passengers and pulling a trailer with a ton of gear.

It was the beginning of my love affair with Pinzgauers.

Jay,

You don't happen to know the year of that Icelandic Pinz, do you?
That thing is nice. I'm almost tempted to buy it just to chap my local DMV's ass. It'd come in handy around the farm too, but that's only a partial justification.
So, it'd have to be '83 (well, soon '84) or older to be good.......

Dreamin' in Wisconsin

No, I don't recall the year and it is quite possible I never knew.

Here is a photo from the beginning of the expedition (in Reykjavík).
We were just getting ready to load our equipment in the trailer. This
was in July 1993.

The sign on the top of the Pinz reads:
Hjálparsveit Skáta Hafnarfirði (translates, more or less, to "Rescue Squad of Hafnarfjörður").

There may have been more of these trucks - I was never quite clear about that.

I did hear back from the folks at Shropshiregunbus.co.uk and the lifted 712K has been sold but it sounds like they deals in this "weird" stuff so, if one is in the market for something different, they might be good to keep in touch with.

Wow that was a really tough truck! Price didn't seem that bad either. Of course then you'ld have to ship it over here, but what an awesome rig!

That VW-MAN truck is pretty cool too.

Yeah, but can you imagine trying to get parts?
