Should be getting my first 712M in the next two weeks or so....
A lot of the insurance companies won't touch it. Does anyone know of a company that will? So far I have State Farm... Are there any others?

I used to be with Travelers and my agent asked them about adding the Pinz to the policy and they said NO WAY so she contacted Progressive and they have been great to work with. Very customer service minded, great rates and goofy commercials.

I recommend them highly.

Haggerty will insure it for about $180 a year. You will be surprised at what you get for that.

hint: car must be "garaged"
lower mileage is better
Dont list it as daily driver
etc etc

Answer all questins as if its a sunday driver.

I'm w/ State Farm, but they are charging about $800/year! They would only do it as a commercial vehicle. Here's a hint--if they know it has 6 wheels, you're probably looking at a commercial policy. It won't fit in my garage b/c of the antenna mount (I may just take it off...), and some places want you to garage it (as mentioned previously). GEICO and Progressive both said no in Maryland. I have HEARD that Condice & Skelly (or something like that) may insure them. I haven't tried Hagerty, yet, but w/ the rates State Farm is charging, I will have to change to someone else soon! -Jon

I'd think that antenna mount could be gone by this weekend! Either that or you've got to move!

trust me, check out haggerty. look at what you get for the money.

Just because you "garage" your truck does not mean it stays in a garage at all. Just means you have a garage to put it in.

They dont check mileage

Its all just questions they have to ask.

Haggerty is a collector car insurance company run by collector car people.
Typicaly if you talk to one of them on the phone they know exactly what a pinz or unimog is. Dont expect that at progressive, geico etc.

I have used Farmers for years. Now that I am older? I am going to try to check with AARP and see what they say.
I'll also check Haggerty, could be worth the trouble to make the call.
I also have that pesky antenna problem, maybe a bit of modification to the door trim as well.

whoa....!!!!!

Do they insure jeeps? Chevy Blazers? Dodge 1 ton trucks? :-)

The fastest way to fail at the DMV or insurance is to lead with "I've got this neat ex-military vehicle...."

Let them figure out what it is. Say the minimum required.... mine went like this:

Make & Model?

1973 Steyr 710

Never heard of it....

It's like a vw synchro van, but with a truck bed. Made at the same place, in fact!

OK, so it's a truck.

Yep

I know in some areas enough folks have mishandled DMV/insurance registration that the pinz has been branded as "military".

But anyone who denies you saying it's a military vehicle should be pushed back upon. Or find another company, moving all your other cars & home as well.

This has been rehashed many times, The pinz is *not* a tactical military vehicle, and should not be treated like Hummers. Even Janes put's it with the other civilian support vehicles like the CUCV. (Tactical would be hummers, armored cars, etc) Likewise, There are definitely civilian pinzgauers in the US. Who owned it before you is immaterial, just like the CJ's, willy's, defenders, land rovers, blazers, & dodge trucks previously owned by the Military.

You have to fight with your $$$, it took my agent about 30 seconds to decide he needed to cover mine because he knows that if any of mine are dropped I move all my insurance.

Have fun,

Alan
