Is it possible to add a VERY small 12v battery after the 24v to 12v converter to maintain the memory lead in a standard 12v stereo (.5 mA MAX)?

Currently, i turn off the converter manually when turning off the truck, which completely disconnects 12v.

I'm thinking a fully charged, 12v battery like: http://www.cabelas.com/p-0036388018049a.shtml or maybe even http://www.adorama.com/VDVZBAT.html connected with a significant diode to ONLY run memory functions might work, but will the 12v output of the converter handle charging as well? Its a 20 amp model btw.

This is how I have done it, the radio grounds through the chassis and antena. Hook the radio ground wire and memory power to a small gell type alarm battery, use a small solar charger to keep it charged.
Very simple and cheap Depending on battery choice you could go 2-4 weeks without re-charging

Hey Jim, do you think one of those small Solargizer in 12v would work?

Thats what I was planning on, with a small gel cell 12v battery, setup just as you described.

I've considered using a battery for a deer feeder. The batteries and the solar panels are fairly inexpensive compared to other similar items on the market. Solar panel positoning might be a weak spot, but nothing says it has to be permanently mounted.

Full disclosure, I sell this stuff. Batteries ought to last for years, because I don't think a radio will drain them quite as much as feeding for 5 to 30 seconds at a time several times a day. But, I haven't tried it, either.

Even with a discount it would probably cost you more for shipping. Try some of the local sporting goods stores up there or maybe even Walmart. Deer season is right around the corner and you might find something up there.

The batteries are fairly common items and maybe about 6" long by 3" wide by about 3" tall for the 8 amp hour ones.

If you are seriously interested and can't find it up there contact me again, I do keep both around here at the house.
