Causes of red death/flaking tank coating

Recently found one of the main causes of tank coating loss.
This small dent loosed 2 large pieces of coating that would wrap around the fuel pick up pipe. This would cause loss of power at times due to fuel starvation.
These flakes are larger than 3"
So, if you dent the tank, it may breach the coating
