I found a local shop that sells some rivnuts, but they don't seem to be the same ones as are originally used to attach the Pinzguaer rub rails. Any suggestions on where to find ones that are identical (or at least very similar) to the original ones? Also, what size are they? I've never used a rivnut / nutcert before, so I don't know much about them... As an aside, I'm having a planing mill produce some new rub rails for my Pinzgauer--he said the original ones were oak. Can anyone confirm or dispute this? Thanks. -Jon

There are also less expensive methods of installation as I recall. Hopefully someone else will have some advice on those.

I got my Rivnuts from Fastenall but they may not have the exact ones you need.
I made a tool from a piece of Alu. a bolt and a nut. Works great but, try it on a piece of scrap first to get the technique. I was only doing four and did not want to go for the expensive tool.

You might be able to rent the tool from Thilo Kass (www.mogsrus.com) and he can also provide the inserts.

Once you figure out the proper technique with the tool, it's very easy.

One for rivet nuts and one for rivets. I know you can change them over but I thought it would be nice not to have to change out and just have the tool dedicated to the job I intend it to work on.

You can set the largest rivet nut or rivet with ease by hand and the price isnt bad either.

Do it right with the proper tool and you wont be sorry later!!

OUCH! I don't think my pneumatic rivnut setter cost me that much! ..... pull the trigger and it sets and releases.....so simple an Erik can do it.

Thanks for the advice everyone--I ordered a tool and hardware today. Once I get my new rub rails back that I'm having milled as we speak, I'll get this project finished up. -Jon

Stripped a couple of rivet nuts on the rub rail my 712. I've read these posts and pcolette's links for replacement, but found some material options:
A few questions for those with experience in these things:

1. what sized drill bit do I use to drill out the old rivet nut?
2. Any benefit to stainless steel vs. zinc coated steel vs. aluminum rivet nuts for replacement?
3. Does the old rivet just drop inside the body channel and rattle around forever (not that I'd hear it), or can they be removed?

One of my rivnuts fell into the body years ago. Periodically I think I hear it
or maybe it is my muffler heat shield, not sure.

If you are putting in the rust inhibitor like you are supposed to the pieces won't rattle anyway. I guess I like the easy road I just put in SAE rivnuts and saved a ton of cash on tools and rivnuts.

The original 6mm rivnuts are installed in a 10mm hole (almost exactly 25/64") so you will want to use a smaller bit to remove the old rivnut. You can also use 1/4-20 rivnuts and they mount in the same size hole.

No big deal if the rivnut falls inside the body channel but if you want there are are large rubber plugs under the channel below each bolt that holds on the side panels. By removing the plug(s) you could possibly fish around in the channel and get the old rivnuts out. The drawback is that you'll be breaking the seal in the undercoating and the body rustproofing. I just left mine in there and have never heard them.

I seem to recall a previous thread that mentioned using aluminum rivnuts might not be a good idea because of dis-similar (?) metals. I used the yellow chromate coated steel nuts.

I just pulled my door panels off and found multiple rivet nuts on the horizontal supports entombed in the grease/wax that have probably been there since manufacture 1976.
One warm day to get embedded in that goo, and they're not rattling anywhere.

Don’t remember where I got this one however.

Waxoyl is hard to come by on this side of the ocean, but...

Here is a recipe for home made "Waxoyl". It's an old fashioned rust treatment / undercoating:

2 1/2 quarts turpentine
12 oz. beeswax / candle wax
1 quart light machine oil

I used something like this to set my rivnuts. Basically home made and worked well. Cheap..
Used aluminum rivnuts.
