Is that bad or good?

No. Repair were mainly missle transporters. It has funky rear doors and no seating in the rear. Rear seats maybe hard to find?

Erik,
Try your spelling again... they were Rapier Missile Carriers... not repair

Before I opened the link with the picture, I thought you were refering to the "workshop" version (similar to the ambulance version, but the rear box has a side door and the inside, well, is a workshop...).

Here is a picture with the original missile racks (courtesy of Coldwarremarketing):

I really like the barn doors that give you more access to the flat bed area (if you had the fold down seats installed !). Wish my 710m had this option.

SAV sells a kit for that if you're interested: http://www.pinzgauer.com/showdetails.ph ... o=SAV6748U

You'd have to find a new spot for the spare. I've considered the kit for the same reason you mentioned - better access to the flat bed.

Jan, I thought he was refering to a Repair truck too.

And on the subject of those rear doors. Though look cool and give full width access to the cargo area, on the original design, the 2 little side panels give some structural strength to the rear side rails/rollbar and the door hinge structure. The barn doors were a Swiss mod for an application, and I very much doubt the rear rollbar would survive a rollover.

I agree with Dave, structurally, this would weaken the design.

Since you guys are interested in this feature for use as a flatbed, perhaps you would do better talking with a local metal fab shop to make up some sort of tailgate, not FULL width but nearly so, which could incorporate some sort of corner stiffener. It wouldn't allow access to the footwell, but it might be ok as a flatbed while still being safer. ??

Agreed that this is something to be investigated further. I may take this idea to my favorite fab guys and see what their thoughts are for modifying or stiffening the side rails should I decide to proceed.

It is not stiffening the side rails, but a structural brace that fits into the area where the panels are on each side of the doors. If you look at later pics of 716/18s, you'll see additional braces on the rear rollbar to the rear panels to give additional support to the rear rollbar. This why all Pinzes were fitted with cargo screens, besides keeping loose items away from the driver,it also adds quite a bit of structural support laterally ( as much as the screens and bolts seem light for this purpose).

The disadvantage to a full width tailgate is that you still need to still brace the side rails in a rollover ( return channels on the ends of the tailgate could be used to hold the rails "captive", but I see many future problems with this). 2) The tailgate is restricted in it's swing with the pintle is still in place, and 3) tailgates are a good way for injuries since heavy items must be lifted beyond the tailgate and set into the bed, causing possible back problems . ( I had thrown my back out 35 years ago just setting a 2 x 3 mirror ( 20lbs.) mirror onto a glass truck.

IMO, the original door and side rails are generally the best way to go for most people. Pinzgauer still used the basic design up through the 716/18s, opting for side fold down rail, allowing for more bracing in the rear corners, and easier side loading ( If mine wasn't a 5 door platform, I would have had these years ago) :D

Also to open the door. the rear soft top has to pretty much removed to clear the handle.
