I have the old style steering wheel. Metal spokes not the plastic looking type. What is the best way to pull the thing off the shaft?
Is there a special tool and if so where does one get one?

I used a three pronged gear puller. Worked great.

Went to Harbor Freight...it is just down the street from me. Bought a three prong puller, let's see how it works.
Thanks for the feedback guys.

Best way is to loosen the nut holding the steering wheel on, but don't remove it - this will stop the steering wheel smacking you in the face when you come to pull it off

BFH worked for me, and loosening the nut but not completely removing it.
