Transmission shifter knob

My shifter needs a new boot.
How do you get the knob off the shifter?
I've tried unscrewing it, but it doesn't budge. Before I break or scratch up
or break the knob with a clamp/vise grip, any suggestions for it's removal?
Thanks,
Ed

It should "slide" off but probably won't because there is a little spring steel sleeve thingy (RING KNOB SHIFTER HANDLE - http://www.pinzgauer.com/showdetails.ph ... o=9009866/) that is probably corroded. Maybe try spraying your favorite solution for getting things like this to let go will help. There is room for the spray to penetrate (the knob is not a tight slip fit) and with some luck you will be able to pull it up and off.

I have been trying to figure out a better way to keep the knobs on but lack of time is just holding me back. Not that there is a need to take the knob off a lot but adding a little "color" to this unit intrigues me (as someone who likes to turn wood).

I have been trying to figure out a better way to keep the knobs on...
I have used liberal amounts of RTV sealant; but it may take many days to cure fully. My experience is that it is plenty strong enough to keep the knob in place, but with enough elbow grease you can break it free when necessary.
