Show me your box!

Yea yea...

I'm curious if folks have built a slim box at the front of the bed space that maintains functionality of the fold down seats. I'm speaking of the space directly behind the wall separating the driver from the bed. Could I see a photo of our design? What did it cost? Where did you have it made?

nothing fancy but it works. The passenger side portion was made to hold the door glass if one wanted to remove the glass and leave the upper metal frame in place. The other two portions I use for general storage.

That's pretty nifty actually. I'm having a difficult time picturing how the windows would mount though.

Good idea 4x4. It's easier to replace the glass than the top door section.

it is easy, you just take out the retaining bolts and lower track which are stowed in the compartment

If you check my previous (and early) posts, I shared photos of a narrow box that a buddy built for me for my previous 710. It is a good underutilized space.

However, if you check my posts, I blieve entitled Nice Rack - Part II, you'll see the door top storage rack that I described and the same buddy fabricated for me. It enables easy storage of the door tops.

No photos handy right now (about to actually go do some off roading at a new local venue) but you can also PM me if you need photos of any of this stuff.

I finally got around to the Pinz box again and thought I'd revive this thread. Any real woodworkers in the crowd should turn away now! :)
The box is built out of 3/4" birch veneer plywood and was going to be a mockup for a 1/2" ply version, but will probably end being the final version instead of rebuilding it out of narrower material. The euro style hinges were a lumberyard blowout item and are technically not the right versions, but they were modified and seem to stay tight and don't rattle. Some small P profile EPDM weatherstripping keeps most of the dust out and helps put pressure up on the hinges. The left side is full depth for storage, The center is shallow for an ipod and 12v accessories and to make room for a future 24v amplifier. The right side is shallow for the snorkel intake. The whole thing is bolted to the 4 10mm bolt holes in the firewall so it won't move in an accident. The wood is clear coated, but it will probably get a coat of Feldgrau paint. My favorite part of the whole thing so far is the armrest it creates for the two rear passengers.

Those are some nice boxes, though suprised no one has made one out of sheet metal. If welding aluminum is not an option in home shops, a basic frame out of 3/4 L iron and then attaching aluminum tredplate to the sides. If I needed one that is the way I would do it. My K has three backwards facing seats mounted there, thus the no need for my truck.
If there was any interest I could cost one out and build a few

Thats exactly the thought of my design as well. L frame and creation of a skin that attaches via slight overlap at the bottom, so it allows you to screw into the 4 screws that hold the straps down. The top is held in place by utilizing the outer of the two bolts that hold in the headache rack. The inner two bolts hold the top skin via a piano hinge. A nice little lock and its a hell of a box

I wonder if a full size marine battery will fit in that space

doubt that a full size marine battery would fit. On the other hand optima 6v batteries hooked in series would work very well, and give a deeper battery life.
