biggest tire size?

Amongst the folks who joined us for our trip to Creekside Edge yesterday, one of our attendees had some Toyo recaps in 285/75/16. They looked pretty beefy and they obviously were mounted on stock wheels.

Is threre a consensus that that this is about as big as one can go with no ill effects?

Any opinions about recaps? These tires were crazy cheap (7 for $900, delivered!) and that got my attention.

Thanks for the opinions to follow.

loud but have done me very well! i have 4 treadwrights on my 710. I have 305s treadwrights on my f250. Not sure i would do that again as they are a little heavy on the MPGs

I have been running 285/75/16 tires on widened rims since '05 on my 712. To date I have had no ill effects from them, like others swear I would have had. funny thing is it is my 710 that has lost wheel bearings and it is running 265/75/16 in the same pattern as my 712 and my 712 gets used twice as much. I can tell you that the larger tires are much harder to turn and in my use they rub at all six locations, although not very hard. I will be doing some decision making when it is time for tires on the 712 as to whether or not I am going to stay with that large of a tire. I like the height but will be looking at narrower choices.

I plead guilty of being the guy with the treadwright recaps. I got the backbone tread but this was my first run with them. No real tire noise at up to 60 mph even with 20psi in them. So far I really like these tires.

They seemed to perform well this weekend Jim.

I wonder how much these 285 retreads weigh compared to the much more "petite" stock sized tires I'm running.

Not sure of the actual weight difference, but the treadwrights seem lighter than the stock ones when lifting them.

I looked at their website, read their story, watched some of the testimonial videos (including the guys in the Defender 110s) and they certainly look like they'd be a good fit for the Pinz.

Everyone likes to buy new stuff but these seem like an excellent alternative to consider for the Pinz and crazy cheap too from Jim's comments.

Balancing may be an issue as their acceptable margins are slightly wider than oem tires. I recommend bead based balancing as many people may not have the proper equipment to balance a Pinz wheel. Then again, it is a pinzgauer and true comfort was never a factory equipped feature.

When the tires were mounted I put 8 oz of ceramic beads in each tire. They sure work good in the limited road miles I have driven so far.

Hi all

Sorry, quick question - standard rims, 712 - optimum "new" size, I though I read somewhere this was 255/85/16s, is that correct?

Not planning a change yet - but if this is correct its a bit of an odd size - I can get 265/75/16s, 285/75/16s or 235/85/16s easy enough (all are common Landy sizes, so easy in the UK) but the 255/85/16 seems a bit of an oddball...

Cheers

255/85 -16 is a common MT size. 235/85 and 265/75 will give you around the same speeds as the original tires... just on this size of the pond, we're speed maniacs. :D
The extra 1" of diameter helps to offset the 12% difference of the transfer case between a 710 and 712

Interesting. If I look at my favourite local tyre supplier (Camskill) they list 25 tyres in 265/75/16 size, but only one in 255/85/16, and thats the BFG MT2 at £160 each!

Seems like the Brits don't use 255/85/16 much... so what's the biggest alternative you can run on a stock rim without fouling - something like a 1050/33/16, maybe? What are other Brits/Europeans running?

I'm currently on 265/75/16. Seems to work as an ok compromise. I can see advantages of changing rolling diameter either way but I don't think I'd want them much (any?) wider.
