Ok, not sure what the problem is, used to run great, but I do a lot of driving. Now it takes a long time to start hot or cold, and runs real rough. Also engine its putting of a lot more heat than normal. Strong smell of fuel too, and cuts out at low rpm. Any help? Also if there arete any pinz owners near new orleans, that'd where I am right now, if you'd be wiling to take a look. Thanks.

Short on oil?
Edit: Or air leak in carb?

According to the dipstick, its got plenty of oil, would an air leak, mean I need new gaskets?

find a good air cooled vw mecanic and have then sync the carbs, check for a vacume leak and give it a tune up.

I've learned that you can't just drive a Pinzgauer day after day without fussing over it here and there. They take a lot of preventative maintenance, much different than a modern car...
Without tinkering, they will eventually stop running consistently, like yours has.

What's a good way to test for an air leak as mine is exhibiting similar symptoms?

Spray the carb area with WD-40 or similar while the engine runs. Small leaks will get plugged by the spray, and the engine operation should change. Pinpoint the location where the spray makes a difference, and that's likely your leak.

I'll try that - mine is only running on full choke and as a result, is popping/backfiring like a good 'un due to all the extra fuel. Might be the idle jets are blocked but if I ever get a day off work I'll give her a good going over

Usually if its running hot, and since you said its harder starting, then it may be running lean. So the above posts about a vacuum leak are right, or check the mixture setting
When it's idling, if you haven't tried this already, spray carb cleaner spray around the sides of the carb or where there are some vacuum lines. If the idle changes when spraying then you've hit the leak. Just what I would do

Doh! Didn't see undysworld's post a few above. Sorry to repeat!

Don't forget to spray under the tin shielding to ck for leaks. Seen several cases of loose-broken intake manifolds.

Replaced both gaskets on the choke housings and it runs a lot better now. Still a bit rough - I'm wondering whether they could do with syncing. Spraying carb cleaner at it did the trick (WD40 didn't have any effect, even when I sprayed it right down the carbs - then again, this was when it was running on full choke, as it turns out)

Mine still wasn't running right but of course having it running on full choke for so long had fouled the plugs. Pulled them all out, cleaned them up and it's sweet as now
