Exhaust Leak

Greetings,
I have learned a lot from this site and I appreciate all the neat stuff I have learned from ya all.
I have 74 710 M and exhaust fumes are intermittently gassing us. I have visually inspected the manifold to the muffler and cannot find any obvious leaks. My Toyota mechanic neighbor suggested that I apply some brake fluid to a vacuum line while the engine is running (for white smoke) to see where the leak is.
Is anyone familiar with this technique ?

of the Pinz often cause exhaust from the tailpipe to get sucked back into the cab. There are also other possible leak points such as the connection between the headers and the heat exchanger.
