Engine temperature?

My ignition system can take an input from a temperature sensor to alter the timing as the engine warms up. Where's the best place to measure the temperature?
I would think the oil pan, but it might take making a hole. Had a drain plug adapter for my Mog.
Not sure that the bottom of the oil pan is a good location on a pinz.
