OK who else seriously plays in the snow with their Pinz? I do and yesterday went out all chained up to break a trail through some drifts to the village! I failed...it got deep enough for me to head for home fast!!! but when I got to our gate....I found I had lost servo to the brakes......in the barn and a quick check showed me that the servo pipe was squashed under the footwell and due to the cold had 'stayed squashed'. I,ll have to thaw it out in the barn and see if servo comes back......don,t want this happening again so may re-route the pipe as a small bore and connect to large bore up out of the way in the engine comparment.

The hose to the brake booster is under vacuum; eventually it can collapse. I have added the appropriate sized spring inside the hose to prevent the collapse more often than replacing the hose (as long as the hose seems otherwise in good shape). I've had more problems where the hose curves at the very front of the engine.

His Pinz is a hybred with a diesel, and diesels do not produce vacuum for accessories. Usually an engine driven vacuum pump is used, and will produce higher vacuum with RPMs.

But as Jim said,, the vacuum line needs to be reinforced (or at lreast heavy wall) to prevent this. This is true of all lines used on the Pinz where there is a suction (aka fuel lines before the pump). Also avoid any sharp bends in the lines and avoid stretching through or around something that can collapse the line with engine movement under torque.
In Dreadnought's case, only one person knows for sure what, where and why it happened.
If I hazard a guess, it was trying to make a trail through the snow running high rpms and the vacuum pump was giving all it had, the vacuum line was finally overcome by all that sucking

Don't know why... the norm in the Pinz world is that everyone elses Pinz is the same as theirs

With that logic, everyone's Pinz has a 12volt system

I am beginning to suspect that David Dunn is actually 'God' living on earth in secret!!!, or he should be working for the NSA solving worldwide security problems!!! because.....Yes I was revving the balls off that OM 602 to keep up momentum....I had slipped off a side sloping trail and ended up on a field.....now the snowplough had cleared that track a week a go and I fell through the pile of snow on the edge of the track and had to push my way back onto the track....to be honest even with 4 chains and all diff locks, only just made it so the diagnosis of a collapsed pipe due to excessive suction in adverse conditions is probably it. Temps here are a bit low at the moment and it was something like minus 20c when I was playing. I will play a fan heater on the hose where it looks a bit squashed (I think it stayed squashed due to being solid with the cold) Looking at it, like David says it is original but externally in good condition and I,m betting that a replacement won,t last the best part of 40 years. I,d better start looking through my box of 'useful' odds and ends, for a suitable spring. Thank you gentlemen

Reading your followup, if the hose isn't completely collapse, the booster should work, but from your story, I am thinking that your brakes may have been warm and when you fell into the deep snow some melted and got into the drums, and we all know what happens with drum brakes when they get wet..... that's what you get for having a hybred and not a real TD with disc brakes

Outcomes: Well gentlemen this is the outcome. David was right again, I changed the bit of 'squashed' pipe for the best quality I could find and let it in. No difference....but temps were still well below zero, the Pinz had been sitting in the barn for days and all the snow up under the wheelwells and packed around the wheel discs and drums did not look like thawing.....I did try a fan heater on one wheel for a day.....it hardly melted anything!!!! so I waited until the temps came up to above zero for a couple of days and took the Pinz for a short drive......the steep road down to the valley with me riding the brakes soon sorted things and 'fully servo,ed' brakes soon came back....yep as the prophet David spake....they were just 'all frozen up' in the drums. The Pinz behaved beautifully on a 10km run today on fast but wet roads, the brakes are really nice and not 'over' servo'ed, compared to the 2 yr old Suzuki Jimny that I just sold. When you haven,t driven your Pinz for a week or so, it really is more of a pleasure when you do. Ps. it is snowing again and back down hovering around zero. And for you David....I have owned so many drum and disc braked Landrovers and I have a U1300L with a nice powerful disc set up, but I find these old Pinz drums better than any other drums I have ever used and well up to the job that a Pinz does....but YES I do lust after a disc braked Pinz, much as I lust after Angelina Jolie!!!! I don,t suppose I,ll get either soon.
