Crawler vs 1st gear

I think the Swiss model had a Crawler (Krawler) gear and the NA version has a 1st gear.
Is there a difference - ie. is the crawler a lower ratio or is it just naming convension?
Also, when driving would 1st gear be used or do you start in 2nd (similar to a 404 Mog where on-road you start in 3rd)?
Thanks,

I have started in either 1st or 2nd gear depending on circumstances. I don't recall the gearing differences between the crawler and 1st gears and which models had the crawler, though I know that not all models had the crawler. One of the other people such as Jim LaGuardia, Jim Molloy, or Constantine Kiesling on this forum will be able to answer that.

Cheers,
Greg

Series 1 Haffies could have either a 4 speed tranny, or a 4 speed with krawler ( 5 speeds) and later, all came with a 5 speed (with crawler).
Some changes to the trannies themselves.
BUT, like Mogs, there are different portal reduction ratios. IIRC, the factory had stamped a code on them to tell what a vehicle had ( 3 different ratio, maybe a 4th later ?) ... but Swiss Military had the lowest and the US had the highest.
With my Swiss Military Series 1, I gernerally start off in 2nd gear on road ( K with 4 speed... so 3rd gear overall ... that should confuse you.)   I am also running 24" tires

Threre are 4 different ratios in the hub gears.
The swizz army had the 2. one with normaly 58 kmh. But the swizz army haf has a longer 5. gear so it is 60 km/h.
The ratios are:
52 km/h
58 km/h
64 km/h
75 km/h

The best one for general sevice is the 64 km/h with a 5 speed gearbox.

The only information I can add it that some of the Komminal Polycab trucks had lower ratios in the transmission as well. We have one with a maximum listed speed of 50km/hr in 5th gear.
Hope this helps.
Takle care.
