What is that red wire for. Mine is cut and connects to nothing.

Red wire goes from alternator to battery via the starter lug. It may have been replaced and left in place. Look next to the Molex and see if it has been re routed through a gromet in the cooling tin. Once the terminal melts, you generally run the power wire around the damaged molex connector.
