gday, does anyone know if the fuel pump rebuild kit is available under a vw or bmw pt no that i might find locally here in aust. i did order the genuine kit from sav with my last parts order but it did not come with the rest of the order, there was a note on the receipt saying out of stock and they would contact me. This was very unfortunate for me because at the time a fuel pump kit was the only part i needed, to make shipping costs worthwhile i bulked up my order with parts i still havent used to a considerable cost, more than 6 times the the cost of a fuel pump kit. I still havent heard back from sav.
I converted my 1985 civilian 712k to dual fuel so i stuck an electric pump in and forgot about it until now but the oil leaking is giving me the #*##* so i am about to pull it off and stick an aluminium plate over it with gasket paper minus the pushrod, i would definately prefer to go back to mechanical but not if shipping is more than half the value of part price. I had thought at the time [6 months approx] i would need more parts sooner rather than later but as it happens i don't, istill have all the spares from last order.
The pump is used in an early 525 bmw and early vw's so i hoped their might be more local solution. I have called around vw and bmw wreckers/parts suppliers but they also use electric. So has anybody gone down this road before.

I got an exact copy of the pinz pump from Napa for $39 that I keep as a spare (get the rebuildable one) . Get one, put it on and when your repair kit comes, do yours and keep the Napa one as a spare.

thanks for that guys but none of those are local brands in Aust. and not available here, I think by the time I ship there would be little saving compared with just reordering kit from sav. http://www.bcdcorona.it/catalogo/RisUso_en.asp this is a link I found a few months ago [hope it works im new at this computer stuff], if I remember correctly I was researching the pierburg pump at the time and this Italian site lists these as replacements for early 525 BMW's, it looks like either of the bottom 2 would likely work as replacements. If the 525 did have the pierburg pump then a kit could be available under some other part no. that works in our genuine pinz pump.
I was just trying to be resourceful and find a rebuild kit locally for my genuine pump as I do not need any other parts yet and the electric pump works fine until I do [most km's I do are on lpg as it is half the price and available everywhere here]. Removing pump and pushrod and sealing/plating over would only be temporary to stop oil leaking until I ship parts again or I could just make 2 new gaskets for either side of baseplate and refit pump as I am sure thats where oil is leaking but it would still leak fuel so that will not be total solution. I therefore believe I will as said just plate over it to stop oil leaking for now, there would likely be a little less wear on rear camshaft lobe assuming it shares one with a valve, I have wondered whether the lobe shared by fuel pump shows more sign of wear than others when engines are torn down [jim might know I would think he has pulled a few down] if so electric could be a smart way to go.
