Door near tail light

I'm going against my better judgment and actually asking a
question on this forum. I don't want to hear from anyone that
has no idea what it is, and just wants to venture an uneducated
guess.

Right beside my left tail light, was a small plate with 4 screws.
(and yes, all four screws twisted in half, even after soaking in WD40)
When I removed all 4 screws, I found that the cup was full of dirt
with one wire. Is this the spot for s european style parking light?
Or does it have anything to do with a backup light?

Mine has a screw-in receptacle with a cover and chain for a plug of some sort. I don't know its function and have not been able to take the cover off. I guess it must have been for a work light or something similar.

Accessory plug like that found on the fire wall of a k. In order for you to use it as a backup light you will need to re-wire it and add the reverse pin available from scott.

So, I guess the question I have is that if I have the backup switch, which I bought from Scott, and I wire
it using the "pink wire" that he details in his instructions, does the pink wire control a relay that, in turn,
controls power to this wire? (Do I hook up the light to this wire and the ground?) I was planning on calling
him because this part was kinda lacking in his instructions.

@crcpinz - If you look behind it you will probably see a cup, with wires
going into the cup. You might be able to follow them back to something
but I would put a voltmeter on it and have someone watch as you press
each circuit breaker. Sounds like someone wired up something custom
on yours.

"Simple as can be. In the existing wiring loom is a pink wire that is unused. It runs from the taillights to the Headlight Switch. We use this wire for the reverse lights.
Remove the pink wire from the headlight switch, and connect it to (+) keyed power at the ignition switch.
Beside the fuel tank, just before the wiring loom goes into the steel tube that runs it past the drive shaft, carefully open the loom and pull out the pink wire. Using a weatherpack connector, splice the pink wire to the reverse switch.
In a nutshell, you are sending (+) down the Pink wire to the tail lights. You are splicing that Pink wire at the transmission so that the connection is only made when the transmission switch is shifted into reverse."

Lets see ... a handful of people read your question and give you the same answer... Perhaps your question could use some revising. It sounds a bit circular to me: A wire that turns on a relay that somehow also supplies the power to the wire?

There's an unused pink wire. Put power on one end, a switch in the middle, and a light on the other end. Chassis is ground. Now, Crack open a cold one using the corner of one of your degrees.

To answer your first question, the wire behind the plate is not related to parking lights (at least from ex-Swiss pinzes' schematics) or backup lights, which were not part of the stock equipment.
On 710Ks, there is in that spot a plug, as mentionned by crcpinz, similar as the one on the front bulkhead of your Pinz, which is related to the truck's batteries. It was used to connect a generator and charge the batteries / power the radios in the 710K from an external source. It is not it in your case as you have a 710M, and the wires would be of bigger diameter.
The pink wire described in Scott's instructions is (off the top of my head) the wire for the convoy lights in the taillights, typically not used during the truck's civilian life, which Scott suggests to re-use for taillights instead of re-wiring.
I don't know if your loose wire is connected to the pink wire eventually or not, and using a voltmeter will tell you straight away.

The Swiss did have radio M's(I have one). It too has the 24v shore power receptacle (with chain and cap) bolted to the rear left tail light panel.

Thanks Andre. I put the door back for now. This weekend I
might have some time to crawl around and try to trace that
wire backwards using a voltmeter. Seems no one knows with
100% assurance. And mine seems a "standard" 710M. I guess the
most important thing I need to know for my use of that power
source (assuming it is one) is how many amps it can safely handle..
You know, I'm wondering if I put a 3 to 5 amp light on it, will it melt
anything.

I know mine hasn't been used. The compartment was filled with dirt.
