Friend looking at a 1984 300GD LWB, OM617, 4 speed manual
Would like to know any owners/ex owners thoughts and what is an 84 with minimal rust worth these days?
Did some Google work but when you can actually find something they range from $40k to 10k - asking price is always much different than actual selling price.
Thanks in advance for any info/insight
Dan

Rust is a very important issue on these and "minimal" can be misunderstood by even experienced car guys. It is worth it to have someone who knows G's to look at it, or you at least have to deeply inspect the rust areas. The G's have a lot of places rust can hide and a small spot on the surface might mean $500 of work behind it, or much more. Look carefully around the tail lights (take them out and look around inside) and probe under all the doors, floor corners, etc. Assuming all is good and no major leaks, trans shifts well, etc. I'd expect something in the mid-teens price-wise.

It was/is a rust bucket (at least in my terms)
From the 6 photos I saw the rear tail light area was rusted out, under the rub rails nasty and the driver floor is Flintstoned.
Many could fix but not worth it IMHO
Also has 290,000 miles on it and while the engine may be able to deal with that the rest of the car I am sure needs 1000's and 1000's in replacement work
Thx

Sounds more like a $3500 truck to me for parts or a body swap. The rust repair at that stage requires full body removal and major welding without a doubt. Often the frames are fine but spring mounts will go early. The area round the tail lights will creep up around the rear gate quickly and go to the inner fender area. Even an experienced body guy would not want to tackle that job. That mileage is too much without a good history of replacements and axle/seal updates.

I'll start. In case it was missed, this WAS mine. Sill, rear fender and many other spots were taken care of. Lucky it was all isolated. That one sounds 10 times worse (= 100 times more work) Mine was way under that price and had 140K miles or so.
$20k...

Hmm, well at least when I replace a seal it doesn't immediately start leaking the week after. Oh and my frame is too heavy to rust away.
