I'm also confused...for the cost of a total rebuild from the factory (although I am not sure of final cost) including shipping and the possibility of not being allowed back into the country by the feds. Get a newer diesel and have someone in this country do it, Why send any more money to Europe unless you feel somewhat guilty about their financial condition. At least here you could have some control over the outcome and perhaps watch it happen. Good learning experience for upkeep down the line.

Yeah...why take out the heater? The things are as windy as a test tunnel and unless it is going into a museum and never move, heat is a good thing.

As I expect the IP is learning about the Pinzgauer, he is probably thinking of the gas heater that is normally found on the K’s, and not the useless exhaust exchange heater …. Just another argument for a 716/718.

No gas Pinz would be blocked from re-entry into the US, just possible non issue of registration in some states. The expense of export/import, is kind of ridiculous. Find a truck in Europe and rebuild it there. The money that would have been use to export a truck to Steyr would make for a nice European vacation (minus Chevy Chase

) to look for a host Pinz to rebuild.

Vince, why not combine all the related threads into one.

Another point to consider. Customs will reject a vehicle, as re-manufactured, if its very heavily restored. Ask me how I know

It started with Land Rovers and then Mini's that were late model having fake VIN plates to the point that it's VERY heavily scrutinized now. If the body is "restored" to new AND the chassis also restored, you have basically no chance of the vehicle being accepted as the year it was born. It will be considered as remanufactured and the year of the work being done is it year of manufacturer, therefore NOT meeting the 25 year exemption rule. I tried to import a Mini with a new Heritage (original builder) body shell and new subframes... NO GO! That's a "new" 1978 Mini. It had FULL documentation and receipts for all the work Including magazine articles.

Is it possible to restore the vehicle and not put it back together? As in the chassis separate from the frame shipped in two separate containers? Even to the point of not reinstalling the engine and shipping it in a box as a rebuilt engine? There has got to be a way around the red tape.

For a vehicle like the gas pinzgauers where you can easily show its production stopped in 1982 (?) I don't think it would be much of an issue. For other vehicles which have much later production (such as minis and defenders) it is a real issue.

Shipping items in as parts COULD work - but they are on to that as well I hear...

Believe me, I've spent a lot of time and frustration talking to customs and DOT. It sucks for all because some people couldn't follow the rules out of GREED.

Here's a very enlightening Car And Driver article on the importation of restored and "restored" vehicles from abroad.

I'm not yet certain how, or even if, this would apply to a petrol engine Pinz already registered/living within the United States and being shipped back to its factory for complete restoration. I'm going to find somebody within US Customs to email directly for better information to share here on the forum.
