Strange symptoms
Strange symptoms
Looking for advice. I was driving home the other day in the rain when it began: faint electrical smell in the cab followed by the wipers tripping out. Reset wipers but kept tripping. Then noticed the engine wouldn't idle & had to keep the revs up or it would die. By the time I got home I had had to restart 4 or 5 times and the starter began making a grinding sound like not engaging. Now, in the driveway, it won't engage and can't start the truck. Batteries seem ok. Has Pertronics and civ. ignition. Any suggestions on what to check first would be welcome. Cheers.

Re: Strange symptoms
Odd, but consider this.
The Wiper motor, fan, horn, and Carb Solenoids are all off that same breaker.
So if there's something wrong with that circuit could effect running. Get the
voltage at the Solenoids, you might have a partial short or something else on
that circuit causing a problem.

Thanks Ron, sounds like a good place to start checking.

Re: Strange symptoms
Check the connections on the back of the alternator, they can work loose or fray over time.
Re: Strange symptoms
Thanks for the feedback folks. Turns out it was a combination of issues. The fan (which I also had running) decided to short out which probably led to the idling problem (thanks for that tip). The starter issue turned out to be the rubber mount letting go around the same time. New one on order. Can the fans be rebuilt?

Re: Strange symptoms
You probably could find a local Motor shop that could rewind and
replace the brushes. Just let them know it should be wound for 24V.
Or, you could replace the motor with a substitute. Prior discussion
