Disc brake conversion

Classic sue has a very similar conversion to GUT, I had also just assumed that both these conversions were using TD hubs and outer portal "faceplates". I never bothered to find out the finer details because their prices were way more than I'd be prepared to spend.
This YouTube screenshot is of a mad Russian 712, I posted I link to his build a few months back in a thread I called "highly modified 712". It replicates the TD layout with dual calipers up front, he has kept the original 712 hubs and only done what appears to be very slight modification to the drum backing plates for the caliper brackets and he's made up the "cap" that fits onto the hub.
A pretty simple solution BUT this design made the track significantly wider so he now runs Hutchinson beadlock wheels and he has widened the 712's body by 200mm so the wider wheelbase suited his overall plan. Also important is the fact that the lower (IIRC) bearings in each of his portals only lasted 1000km because they couldn't stand up to the extra load that widening a wheelbase causes, the solution was to machine the portal to accept a bigger/stronger bearing. Apparently this worked as he says in his build thread that he has since travelled many many thousands (over 10,000 IIRC) of km's without issue but it does show that every action has an equal and.......you know the rest. So any kit really needs to be well thought out from all angles.
If a kit was to be put together my preference for its design would definitely be for the GUT and Steyr approach of supplying new hubs, portal "faceplates" and probably wheels too. One improvement I would like to see is a beefier vented disc especially up front but for parts commonality probably use it all round, and it really needs to be an "off the shelf" easy to get anywhere disc.
P.S. I have no idea why "fantasy fest 2015" would be recommended for me I didn't go that year

Re: Disc brake conversion
I purchased my 1972 710m with disc brakes on it. I'm going to be swapping out rims and tires soon so I'll take photos from a bunch of angles and post for reference. I have no idea who did it or how it was done. Andre and Jim have both worked on this rig so they may have more details.

Re: Disc brake conversion
I think your disc brakes are the same as what was used on the Redbull trucks. From what I heard they worked well - dual calipers in front / single rears using Wilwood calipers and different rims. They had to cut the brake backing plate and machining the hubs - different rims of course.

Re: Disc brake conversion
They stop extremely well. They are based on Mercedes ML hubs. The clearance on the Mercedes rims were too tight though and show som rub from gravel getting caught in between. When I had the TR beadlocks made we measured to ensure additional clearance. I'm hoping to get them mounted over the weekend so I'll post those pics.

Re: Disc brake conversion
Looking forward to seeing it. I looked again at a picture of your Pinz and it only has single front calipers - not dual like the Redbull trucks. You also had your brake master cylinder replaced with a TD one - correct?

Re: Disc brake conversion
I'll have to check on the TD Pinz master cylinder... not sure on that one.
Here's pics of the Disc Brakes on mine, finally got around to putting on my TR Beadlocks, my daughter got married over the summer so all my time and funds were occupied for a while

Did anyone besides me notice the picture of Key West at the top of the page? I read the Fantasy Fest is the largest gathering of fruitcakes on the east coast. Some of the body painting is amazing, however.

Re: Disc brake conversion
Wow ok... of this gets some real traction I'm in!
2 things on my 712k I want to change is the no power steering which is now doable....
And these dam 6 drums!!!
Some of the disc conversions look simple and clean.
If we could just come up with a parts list of what's off the shelf and what's custom or needs to be modified I'd dive in.
Any of you in this thread that have disc conversions can you post more detailed pictures?

Re: Disc brake conversion
This disc brake conversion still involves a number of custom machined parts and other changes:
- Wheel hubs - either machined or completely new to reduce the overall diameter and to have the new wheel bolt circle pattern
- Backing plates - machined for caliper clearance and drilled for brake line connection
- Wheels - requires a switch to new 17 inch rims for caliper clearance and for adaption to the ML bolt pattern. Not sure if the ML wheels have a high enough load rating for the pinzgauer
- Caliper bracket (hard to see how it is attached to the Pinz backing plate / portal axle assembly)
- Proportioning valve for front / rear balance
- Different master cylinder (larger TD version?)
Curious also to see how far out the wheels are with the TrailReady's on.
