radio colsole
I need to get around to installing a radio in my Pinz. I'm just looking for an AM/FM/CD/MP3 head unit with a couple speakers.
Is it worth getting a marine radio? Is it just the face of these radios that are resistant to the weather, or the whole radio?
Right now I am leaning towards the consoles I've seen that mount between the head bumpers - radio facing forward and speakers at an angle to each front seat. I know these have been offered for sale, but I can't find any on the net.
Any help with links? Suggestions? Particular radio/speaker setups? Can 4 channel head units be bridged to only use one pair of speakers, or do I just lose the amp power to the front or rear pair? Mono would be fine in the(my) Pinz.
thanx

Whatever final choice you make on the radio setup, I recommend buying one that has a USB port on the front. Stick in your flash memory card with your favorite songs and go. I have yet to find a cd player that can hold up to the ride, the flash memory is pure digital and plays with nary a skip.

don't know if the bidding has ended yet but Brian M has one for sale on Ebay. That particular overhead console has been built in numbers here in AZ. As far as the marine radio goes, the only difference I found was the manufacturer provided some sticky tape to cover openings in the top of the radios housing and the front plate had a gasket to keep the weather out of the unit. I now just run an eclipse radio unit with much better results.

One thing the marine radios seem to offer that the standard auto stereos don't is a wired remote control. They differ in functionality, but some seem to repeat at least the important parts of the main unit display that the wireless remotes don't.
The wired remote opens up some mounting options for the main unit. If you're seldom using CDs or DVDs, I don't think the main unit will need to be within reach or even within sight.

Anything can be made to work together, it just takes a little thought. The radio units similar to the one on Ebay were made for a while but I have not seen any new ones in some time. I will ask around and see if the guy building them is still interested in making another one. The unit is not all that complicated. It is made from sheetmetal and then finished with the desired paint/spray on coating.
The Tuffy unit comes is one or two radio configuration. I am not sure what the single unit looks like. I have the double radio unit and use it to house my CB, AM/FM radio, controls for the intercom, interior dome lights and time-temp gauge. Oh yeah the Tuffy also holds the XM radio antenna and the GPS antenna. I mounted some marine grade speakers in the head guards and two more speakers on the rear roll bar.

Mike,
Could you post a photo showing your Tuffy set-up?
Also, what Tuffy model did you use?
Cheers
