I'm sure that this subject has been beaten to death but I am fairly new to the Pinz world. I bought my 710M a couple of months ago and would like to go through it and change the fluids. I've read the posts on this site and was looking for a little more info. How much fluid do I need to buy? I'm planning on using Amsoil 80w90 for the gear lube but not sure about the gearbox(trans). There seems to be quite a few opinions on the subject. Also, is there any special procedures that I need to follow, or things that I should look for? Any help would be appreciated on both the procedure or opinions on fluids.

I faced the same problem recently. Here is what I did. I used Redline 80w GL-4 synthetic in the transmission. I used a Chevron 75-90W petroleum based oil in everything else. Tranny will take about 7L (qt.) and the rest of the fill will take you at least 2 gal. The reason I used a basic petroleum based oil in the the other portions of the drive train was because I had that oil on hand, it meets the MIL spec. required and if I get a leak in the outside gear boxes the fluid will not ruin the brake shoes.

Oberon - You are correct when you say that there are many schools of thought concerning the fluids for our trucks. The one thing that you must be carefull with, is the tendency for full syn oils to leak past the older seals. I am running the normal oils for lube in my truck for that reason. The trans requires ONLY GL-4. Do not use GL-5 as it is too slick for the syncro's and will cause a failure. Napa sells it in quarts and you will need more than 2 but less than 3. Follow the procedure that is outlined in the repair book and don't forget to remove the fill plugs first! That way if a fill plug is frozen you will still have oil in the assembly.
Probably a GL-5 rated lube that has viscosity "enhancers" so that it covers the whole spectrum of potential uses. As long as you don't use it in the tranny which needs GL-4 you are fine. I seem to remember that the Pinz requires a MIL SPEC 2105 rating so I look for a lube that meets that for the gear boxes & reduction units.

Gents GL4 is getting a bit hard to find, and only two major manufacturers still blend it to that spec to my knowledge, those being Pennzoil & Texaco.
If you talk to the oil companies/reps you will find that "most " oils have blend tolerances for GL2, 3, 4 & 5 applications.
Those bottles you have seen at Napa are a wide tolerance lube oil and will do just fine.
By the way look on the back in the small print you will see "Ashland Oils".
Now look at a Valvoline bottle on the next shelf. On the back yes, Ashland Oils. You just paid about a $1.20 more for the same bottle that you will be bunging in the waste barrel.
It's caveat emptor again1

I found some at a local ranch supply store (Murdoch's).
I reckon they carry it for tractor use, but what they hay?!? GL-4 is GL-4.

What about up where I live...Most people use sythetic in the diffs because of the COLD.
I just want to be as easy on her as I can. Had to pull the clutch cylinder apart today cause she was leaking. Replaced the o ring...could find one like the one in it, but I just added anothe one - seems to have sone the trick.
I also had to pull the speedo cable out cause the o ring in her was leaking. Learning lots about being a mechanic now.
That speedo is sure tricky...with the pin in there and no manuals yet.
