Porsche fan = Pinz fan?

Post by milesdzyn »

Does anyone know if the Porsche, 911 (69-70 & 80-89) 930 (all) 914/6, fan is the same as the Pinz fan? Some pople have said that the Porshe fan is made of magnesium, however the pictures I found look like the same materials just a diffrent color, so I can't verify the materials used. They aren't any cheaper but for the guys that like to go fording and have blown apart their nylon Pinz fans this could be a option. I haven't been able to get my hands on a used one yet to measure it, but it sure looks like a match.

The only picture I have of the Pinz fan is from the SAV web site so I won't post it here without thier permission.

Nope...
911 fans are 2" smaller OD than the Pinz fan..

The shaft diameter of the 911 fan is the same, BUT the pinz fan is deeper on the alternator shaft..

The belt position is also different between the two...

Ind the Pinz fan is made of nylon while the 911 fan is aluminum or magnesium dependant upon the year it was made..

I work with both daily and can tell you they are not the same... The 911 fan also has 4 degrees less pitch on the blades than that of the Pinz fan..

The reason why Pinz fans explode is because they are so far out of balance... Look for my fan balancing thread from last year for details..

Was not able to locate thread. If you have a copy please repost it, very interested in this topic.
It may have been blown away after the spamming.

Porsche fan = Pinz fan?

Just thought I'd mention that my wife is a Porsche fan and I'm a Pinz fan :D

Although after going to the Calico Mogfest she is becoming a real Pinz fan!

I save most interesting postings so they don't get lost for me, and I've included Jakes' info on the Pinz Fan.

When I have my induction off next year I plan to send him my fan.

"My latest madness has been able to get rid of a lot of engine noise associated with out of balance cooling fans.

When I tore into the test engine that Sean from Eurotruck donated to my R&D program I noticed the the cooling fan was not balanced in any way so I made a mandrel for my CNC balance machine and plopped the fan in the balancer.

The results were STUNNING! The fan was nearly 12 grams out of balance and that's HUGE for something that runs at the sustained speeds of the Pinz engine.

After balancing that fan, I removed the fan from my Pinz and balanced it. This fan was 14 grams out of balance! I did the balance work (its not easy balancing a components thats 14 grams out) and re-installed the cooling fan....

The difference was tremendous! The vibes at 95-100KM/h were greatly reduced and the differences in balance can even be felt when you rev the engine and only hold your hand on the engine, its very notable!

So for those of you that have a desire for this I offer the service for 65.00 with a 3-4 day turnaround. Here is a few pics and etc about my balancer and balance services http://www.aircooledtechnology.com/serv ... ncing.html

For those who want a smoother operating engine, this often overlooked aspect should be taken into consideration."

Hey Eric, have you got the fan I loaned you back from balancing yet?
If so, how is it?

He should have it anyday.. What a nightmare it was to get shipped back to him!!!

I have had quite a few Pinz fans shipped in for balancing recently, some were better than others. One of them was impossible to balance!

Hey Jim,

Thanks and no I don't have it yet, Spoke to Jake Wednesday, he said I should have it in 5 to 7 working days, let's hope it makes it this time and it's also a good thing I got a loaner from you, cause Big Bear Off Road Adventures and myself would have been out of business for the last 3 1/2 months with out the pinz running tours, as you know mine is the only maintained vehicle in full time use there, and I think Doug and I would have been out a lot of moolah, with all the huge group tours we did and you even joined us on, Thanks for that it was a great day and hope you can join us again on some tours, I'll let you know when the fan arrives so I can install it and the new valve cover gaskets I got from you...again thanks

Well all my fan finaly arrived on saturday the 9th around 7pm my time, installed it a few days later, boy does it make a huge difference, the vibraterion is almost totally gone (sure was worth the 3 1/2 month wait to get it ballenced, due to shipping mishaps) I can saw the vibrater foot as I call it that we get driving our trucks is now gone after a long day of driving my pinz, what a great thing to actually have something ballenced, you would have thought it would be ballenced from the factory atleast up to redline, but I guess that was to much work.

Again thanks Jake I will be enjying this mod for a while.

Eric, I knew you'd see a big difference!! From what I have seen the factory did many things with the Pinz engine marginally. Its a well built, super engineered piece, but the emphasis of the vehicle certainly wasn't on the engine!!! It gets the job done, but can be made much better and pretty easily.. Simple little things like this fan balancing can make HUGE improvements to the entire vehicle!
