How To: Remove and Replace Cylinder Head

I have a broken exhaust port stud on #1 cylinder and it is the one towards
the engine. It is broken off flush with the head surface. There really isn't
any room to drill it out, so it looks like I need to remove the head to do the
repair.

Can the head(s) be removed without pulling the engine?

Any other tips or tricks for a cylinder head R & R?

Yes , they can be removed in place. If the stud is broken flush, then MIG weld a nut to it and it will come right out. I use a 90 deg reversing drill with a LEFT HAND BIT, as it usually pulls the stud out when it grabs :wink:
Most of the time the stud falls out and is not broken off, maybe you'll get lucky :)

I had the same trouble a while back. It's easier than it looks, just keep track of all the little bits and pieces and where they go. Since all the sheet metal was off, I took all the heads off and cleaned them up real pretty. Order up some seals for the oil returns, may as well replace them since you have it apart, exhaust donuts too. It'd be a good time to switch to Scott's slick new rubber valve cover gaskets as well. The hardest part for me was re-installing those tiny 'keepers' that hold some of the sheet metal panels on.
