Fan motor wiring

Post by milesdzyn »

While cleaning and inspecting the cab fan motor, I noticed the wiring on the inside was starting to lose its skin. The wire is a solid core wraped in a fabric layer with a final outer layer of a thin film. It is this thin film that is wearing off, kinda like a snake shedding its skin. Otherwise it looks just fine for a 34 year old motor, bearings could use some fresh grease.

My question is should I put some shrink tube over the fabric coating, leave it alone, or replace the wiring with new. Just not real familiar with the old fabric coated wire.

Fan motor wiring

Post by pcolette »

Wiring on my fan motor was frayed where it passes thru the motor housing. The rubber grommet had mostly disinigrated and one wire was worn bare. I put a couple of layers of shrink tube over it and it has worked out fine. Also took the opportunity to put a disconnect plug in the line to ease future removal if needed.
