Hey you blokes
Have you ever wanted to know more about some of those BIG truck names and their history.
Someone in the UK sent me a link:- classictruckpark.com.
Check it out especially the AEC Matador, how's about hauling your Pinz to the next RMP treffen with this monster or a Scammell.

Yes feeling the age sometimes as well, but less of the "old" alright!
Actually its funny looking at alot of that stuff. For example the Guy trucks of Wolverhampton were bought by Jaguar Cars in 1961. They set about building a new range of trucks called the Big J series. That's the early version you see on the web page. Big J Big Jaq' if you did'nt get that already.
They launched it at the factory in 1964 and I had just got a part time grunt job at the plant to help with the festivities. For my pains I got a five pound tip from the chairman Mr William Lyons no less, former board member of Swallow sidecars that later become Jaguar Cars. I also got to sit in a "D" type on display that took Sterling Moss to a lot of victories. To a snot nosed kid at the time that was a good as it got!
As you can see Leyland gobbled up alot of those names you see in that web site only to disappear itself. Today I see alot of parity with then and now with the US industry. In short too few customers chasing too many brands, some have got to go. Just like some of those long gone names the problem was Unions and pay scales/benefits.
Here's my prediction for the future US based car industry.
Ford will shrink hoping to base its recovery on Walmart style sales tactics that will fall short of expectations. The market is saturated with Ford products, Re-badging of Mazda products will only have a short lived success against Mini, Aveo, Scion, Toyt/Honda renditions.
GM will lose market share but will survive by being global and selling Asian/Euro world cars to the US.
Daimler/Chrysler (how these could have got hitched together in the first place beats me!) Will dump Chrysler only to be bought by someone like Shanghai Motor Holdings an investment group. Chinese will gain a foothold in the US by producing Chryslers maybe rebadging them as the Chely et al.
Toyt and Honda will be the big boys on the block. But what about Saturn you might ask?
Yes part of GM, they will be a succes due to non union production lines and super competitive products. It shows what the US can do given a clean sheet of paper and a level playing field. By that I mean in both directions with less of the Congresional lobbyists Ford is so fond of wasting its money on trying to exclude foreign manufactures from these shores.
Interesting times, I hope I am wrong
