No !st or Reverse

Post by lindenengineering »

So gents since I have been telling you tales of Pinz workshop woes here's a little riddle that would have saved some money.

One owner got so fed up with trying to fix his gearbox it came into the shop under his arm! Gearbox not a Pinzgauer!

The complaint was "no matter what I do, I cannot get 1st or Reverse gears! It was alright when I left it before winter set in, now it cannot back it out of the garage. Having been torn down but by this hapless soul I opened it up and took a look. Verdict every thing working fine except for signs of corrosion (water in the box).

Bin wadin have yah?--Oh sometimes came the reply.

When I put the shift tower back on I tried the gears for the last time, guess what--No Reverse or 1st. Off with the tower lets see what's going on 'er shall we!

A manual shift with a pry bar on the selectors showed all was well, so then we looked at the shift tower. On the top is a detent plug. This little bugger was corroded solid, so it wouldn't allow shifting into 1st and Rev gears. A quick change of the plug and voila worked a treat!
This would have been a five minute fix, the biggest job would have been lifting the floor plate. So beware, if you have this problem. Above all drain the gearbox oil regularly if you are a "sub mariner". Don't leave it to fester over the winter.

Hey Dennis...is there any way to post a picture of the object that was corroded. I like to keep a photo log of all the suggestions, upgrades and repairs posted by the group. Pictures do a great job of explaining things for me as I am very much a visual person. Or a link to a photo would work. Really appreciate the prevention posts.
