Electronic signal flasher/relay wiring

Post by milesdzyn »

Okay this may just make me sound really stupid but here it goes. I've allways noticed that the wiring for the signal flasher relay is done with wires ending with the standard female spade clip. And they look messy, are a cross short waiting to happen and you have to remember which wire goes to which connection. I dare say that there have been many signal / brake light issues due to a mix-up in wires.

So I was looking at one of my Buss electronic signal flasher units #234 24v 3blade (X-P-L) and a pattern appeared. They're the same!!! Yes the 3 blades are an exact match to a common 5 prong relay minus the 2 additional prongs. So why not hard wire a standard socket relay, cut off the 2 unused wires and never have to worry about the wires being hooked up to the right blade again.

Standard relay to the Left, Signal flasher to the right.

So I know this can't be an original idea? Don't know if it will work with a 4 prong analog signal flasher, don't have one in front of me at this moment.

Hmmm, my spade clips have a plastic cover on them to prevent any "short" from happening. If one makes note of the wire color and terminal before swapping them it should not be a problem. I can though appreciate the idea of a permanently mounted female spade connector allowing the flasher to be "pushed" into position. Much cleaner and robust for sure. Someone will do it no doubt. Report back to the fold...
