Anyone powder coat or paint the engine covers?

Post by todds112 »

The sheet metal covers and air intake are all pealing paint and have light surface rust here and there. It is worthwhile removing and painting all that?

I figure while I'm out of commission, I could send that stuff off for powder coating, which might be more durable than rattle canning them.

Mine were kind of ugly so I had them bead blasted and then I sprayed them with acrylic enamel. Couldn't find anyone close by to do powder coating but the enamel is staying very nice.

I sand blasted then powder coated all the engine covers / flarings in semi-gloss black ....they still look good after 11 years of use!

Just got back from an 500 mile trip, rained and hail the hole time. lost the back lights. Powder coating faired much better than the enameling.I have considered the engine area. But the garage here says with the milage I put on my pinzgauer, i may only have a year or so left on my engine? So I am considering one of jake raby's massive type four engines. Just want to see how the Efi goes.

G'Day Erik,
500 miles (about 800km in my terms )......Hmm, how much mileage / how many trips like that, would you do in a year?
Was the motor in good nick when you got the vehicle?
Just curious

I average about 200 miles a day mostly in town. but friday I was in northwest kansas near mushroom rock or faris caves. pretty sandy area. I have been to your web site many times you have a very nice pinz some day I hope to have one just as nice. The engine seems to be in good condition I burn about a 1/2 a quart of oil every 2000 miles. I have a friend in Melbourne as we speak on vacation she say's its a very pretty area.

G'Day Erik,

Yes, that is a fair bit of mileage ... I must admit my Pinny is a LOT easier to live with as a 2.7
It far more tractable on the road and in the bush. (Jakes talking about his motors coming in up to 3.3 isn't he?)

Like you some of our trips average around 300+ km with some (quite rarely at the moment) going to around 3000 km.
As regards your Pinny rebuild/upgrade, if you require info etc just feel free to contact me!

I hope your friend has a nice time in Melbourne.
We've turned on a nice sunny day with blue skys for her today (about 21C).....mind you she probably thinks we are all nuts as most people you talk to nowadays think a wet, rainy day is BEAUTIFUL! ..... we need rain, and lots of it desperately.
Tell her to come back to Melbourne/Victoria after we have had a good wet year and enjoy all the gardens, flowers and greenery .... unfortunately a lot are dead or dying at the moment!

I have talked to Jake about a 3.1L engine upgrade. I sure appreciate your offer on info I am going to Dennis garage on April the 6th to have him look at my lights; it’s a fumy thing the cops like to pull you over if you have no lights tail lights at night wonder why? At that time I am sure he will make some recommendations and I will look forward to talking to at that time thank you Erik.

There's a place just over the hill in Idaho Falls. Figure I can get everything apart even if I'm stuck on crutches. Might even have them do the indicator light (lockers) panel, and hydraulic control panels.

2.7 and 3.1L Pinz motors

Post by andy »

Are these new and different engines you all are talking about or are they bored with new pistons etc? Just curious, I'd like a little more highway speed and eventually my 710M will probably requiring something along these lines.

Originally SDP developed a 2.7 version of the air-cooled motor back in the early 1980's which was to be fitted to all new Pinny's, but only a few factory version were ever built.... instead the Pinny evolved into the diesel TD in the mid 80's.
A limited number of 2.7 components were available as spare parts so in the 90's a US based Pinny reseller started selling components they had developed for use in the Red Bull Pinzgauers and the rest is history

The mods involve boring the cylinders and using larger pistons (with higher compression if wanted) and optional new camshafts.

Various people around the world are offering components to do this and some are even increasing the capacity beyond 2.7

Thanks for the response. Now, in round figures, more ore less, what would that upgrade /conversion cost in US dollars?
