Smoke finally came out!

Post by M Wehrman »

I have picked up the smell of a short for a few months, but no signs until the last outing. I popped #12 breaker, reset it good for about 10 secs. Well i just went out to eyeball the situation, hit the breaker and fffftt-flames :o  from the backside of my master cylinder! After all my years as a mechanic, I've never seen what looks like a short from the inside out on the brake switch. There is a definate burn thru where the bakalite meets the crimp on the side. the wires are still attached at the switch but one melted the insulation covering the connector. Has anyone else experienced this problem with the switches or is it a weak link and I should be looking for a cause of failure.

I lost my brake light switch in Co a couple of years ago. The switch is available at the VW offroad store at Mesa Dr and Broadway for $5.00. I replaced it and all has been well ever since.
