tranny issues

Post by mjnims »

Drove the 710 home last night with no problems. When the wife got in it to go shopping she could not get it into reverse or 1st. I assume one of the shifting forks must be out of place. Is there any other reason. The shifter linkage moves freely and moves the outside shaft up but will not move into the reverse or 1st gears.
Thanks
Mike

Did the pivot rod pop off the shift tower?(the short rod )
Try moving the shift lever at the trans and see what happens.

everything at the transmission looks good. The large pin goes up but will not move enough to engage the gears. I checked the eyebolt and tightened the nut but still no go.

Hey Mike...Dennis just posted something about this a few weeks back, don't know if this will solve your issue but here is the link to the post:

If it is could you snap a pic and post it?

I am going to look into it in the morning. The truck only sits overnight and a few hours during the day. I bought the truck a few months ago but have only been driving it now for about a month. I don't know the history but have changed all the fluids not long ago and they looked fine. The level is good and the oil in the Tranny is the same I use in my 712, which I have a bunch of miles on. I am certainly going to entertain Dennis' idea and will take pics if this turns out to be the problem.

It could also be a broken fork pivot(can be extracted), or the limit plate could have slipped(under cab, bottom of shifter)

Gents
If you do have a stuck plunger, all you merely have to do is raise the floor plate and remove the plunger assy that is screwed into the tower.

If you then drop the external link off the top at the same time, you can then reach down and grap the shifter assy as a whole. By lifting it up you will be able to see if the selector shaft telescopes into the tower housing. Should it slide completely in then, try to operate the shifter rod fore and aft . It should allow you to select a gear. If no joy then its inside the tower or in the box proper.
If you suspect its in the box, pull one of the Ist /Rev pivots out. The one at the top of the case is the easiest to get at. Should both be broken and have slipped the selector fork will be "waggling around and doing nowt" in the box.
Best of luck

soudns like I have my work cut out for me. Fortunately this is not the Pinz I was going to take to the Treffen. I just wish it had happened to me instead of the wife.
I will check the simple the simple things in the morning but don't have a lot of time. Will let you know.

The shifting tower works freely with no issues.

The block which should move back and forth to engage 1st/rev only moves a fraction of an inch.

I am assuming the pivot pins are those under the small plates held by the 10mm bolt. If memory serves correctly I read somewhere the pins are attached to the plates, or at least they are supposed to be.

Well this has to look familiar to some of you. The culprit was a broken pin. Good thing the one in my extra tranny was in good shape. Now the 710 is on the road again.

Mike,
Thanks for posting the photos. There's nothing like a picture to make things clearer for the rest of us who haven't had to do this yet. Probably only a matter of time.

Thx for the pics. 75Pinz posted that problem a while back and I just couldn't picture what was broken, even looking at the parts books.

How common of a failure is this I wonder? Would it almost be worth it to buy one of those as a spare to carry with you?

I have heard of the people breaking these but was not quit sure what they were talking about. I drive my 712 much harder than my 710 and heck the 710 broke when the wife was going to take it. Maybe she did something wrong.

Mike
Did you remove BOTH pins?
The one the underside is a bit difficult to get at and may also be sheered off. By the way the selector fulcrum will operate with one pin in good condition but it can cause early failure of ther good 'un.
Glad you found the problem.

Dennis
Thanks for the heads up. I already ordered a couple figureing that the other would be worn as well. I am headed to the SWPA Treffen with my 712 so the 710 will not be getting used until the parts are changed anyway.
Good call and thanks for the help
